What is the purpose of Demonstrative adjectives?
- Demonstrative adjectives describes the location of a NOUN
in relation to a person.
- Demonstrative adjectives in English are “This” “That” and
“That over there”
- For example:
This book, that chair, that table over there
- When we say “This,” we are implying that the object is
relatively close to the person speaking.
- When we say “that,” we are implying that the object is a bit
further away from the person speaking.
- When we say “that over there” we are implying that the
object may be some distance, across the room, perhaps
from the person speaking.

What is a demonstrative adjective in English?
Demonstrative adjectives in English are simply the words:

THAT THOSE
THAT OVER THERE THOSE OVER THERE

In English, we use one of the demonstrative adjectives based on:

1. How close or far the item is from us

2. How many items we are talking about

The sweater Look at those boots.

In Spanish, demonstrative adjectives have 3 basic forms:

THIS / THESE THAT / THOSE THAT / THOSE

(close to speaker) (not near speaker, but (farther from both
possibly near listener) listener and speaker)

OJO: Note that there are TWO ways to say THAT/THOSE depending on
the distance of the object from the speaker.

Like all adjectives, demonstrative adjectives must match the noun they
accompany in two ways:

1. Masculine / Feminine

2. Singular / Plural

Which means that each of our 3 basic demonstratives have four variations!
