ANTHROPOLOGY
 Studies man’s origin and development from a
simple into a more complex individual within his
cultural environment.
 Concerned with the knowledge of the biological

characteristics of humans.
 It is interested in human evolution .
Physical anthropology is also concerned with the
study of fossils, artifacts and ancient excavations
to explain the present. It is closest to the subject
of physiology, anatomy, biology and zoology.

CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY studies the


various factors of man’s lifestyle, culture, religion,
family, kinship relationship, language, values,
traditions, livelihood, etc.
Divisions of Cultural Anthropology
1. Ethnography and ethnology
 Both study the interrelationships of people and their
origins and environment, compares and analyzes their
similarities and differences in order to understand why
people have different cultures.
2. Archeology
 concerned with the buried remains of ancient cultures and
the skeletal remnants of human beings and their remains
and their associations within their social group during
their time on earth.
3. Linguistics
 is the science of language which is an integral aspect of
culture
THE RELATION BETWEEN
SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY

 Socialanthropology and sociology


are very closely related in the
sense that both study the same
subject matter, that is, the
interrelationships of man to his
social environment.
SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY
-studies the past and ancient civilizations and their
application to smaller social groups.
- is interested in ancient societies and smaller
groups

SOCIOLOGY
-takes over and studies the present and concerns
itself with human social relationships with special
emphasis on groups and institution
- studies the larger aspects of society by using the
findings of anthropology in its analysis and
interpretations of human behavior in associative
living.
