• FRACTION: A fraction represents a part of a whole or
a collection. In a fraction , the number at the top is known as the numerator and the number at the bottom is known as the denominator .
In 3/4 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator TYPES OF FRACTIONS Type of Fractions
Proper fractions: The proper fractions are those where
the numerator is less than the denominator.
For example:8/9 will be a proper fraction since
“numerator < denominator”.
Improper fractions :The improper fraction is a fraction
where the numerator happens to be greater than the denominator.
For example: 9/8 will be an improper fraction since “denominator < numerator”. Mixed fractions: A mixed fraction is a combination of the whole part and a proper fraction. For example:
Like fractions: Like fractions are the fractions
whose denominators are same.
For example: 1/4,3/4 and 2/4;
Unlike fractions: Unlike fractions are the fractions whose denominators are different. For example: ½ and 1/3 are unlike fractions.
Equivalent fractions: When we multiply or
divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same number, we get another fraction equivalent to it. Ex: 2/3 and 4/6 are equivalent fractions. Since, 4/6 = (2×2)/(2×3) = 2/3 Unit Fractions:A fraction is known as a unit fraction whose numerator is equal to 1. Example: 1/8,1/5,1/6,1/9 CONVERTING UNLIKE FRACTIONS TO LIKE FRACTIONS The unlike fractions can be converted to like fractions by following the steps given below.
1. Find the LCM of the denominators.
2. Find the fraction equivalent to each of the given fractions with LCM as the denominator.
