population.
 Total number of people suffering from a lack of food is over one billion people
worldwide.
 As per estimates of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about 840 million
people remain chronically hungry and out of this 800 million are living in the
developing world.
 In last decade, it is decreasing at the rate of 2.5 million per year, but at the same
time world’s population is increasing.
 Developing countries as well as most of the under developed countries are at
present encountering severe food problems.
Causes of World Food Problems
 Over population
 Over exploitation of environment
 Unequal development
 Food wastage
 Urbanisation
 Depletion in food granary
 Exclusion of poor countries from global trade market
 Natural calamities
 Food supply and demand imbalances
 Lack of good transportation facilities
 Pollution
 Environmental degradation
 Loss of farmland
Changes caused by Agriculture

Changes caused by traditional
agriculture

 Deforestation
 Soil Erosion
 Loss of soil nutrients
 Over grazing
Changes caused by modern
agriculture
 Fertilizer problems
 Pesticide problems
 Loss of soil nutrients
 Water logging
 Salt accumulation
 Salination
 Use of chemicals
Changes caused by overgrazing

 Increaseddensity of domestic animals has put fodder

producing lands under stress
 The land is exposed to erosion by rain and surface run off
 Regenerative capacity of soil is lost
 Excessive grazing renders land barren and the soil
particles then exposed become dry
 Plants become weak due to lack of nutrients
Global Report on Food Crises 2022

The 2022 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC 2022) highlights the
remarkably high severity and numbers of people in Crisis or worse
(IPC/CH Phase 3 or above) or equivalent in 53 countries/territories,
driven by persistent conflict, pre-existing and COVID-19-related
economic shocks, and weather extremes. The number identified in the
2022 edition is the highest in the report’s six-year existence. The report
is produced by the Global Network against Food Crises (which
includes WFP), an international alliance working to address the root
causes of extreme hunger.
Conclusion

A world where every person who access to sufficient food to

sustain a healthy and productive life, where malnutrition is
absent, and where food originates from efficient, effective
and low cost food systems that are compatible with
sustainable use of natural resources.
