1) MULTIPLYING A NUMBER WITH 5
 STEP 1: TAKE THE NUMBER TO BE MULTIPLIED AND DIVIDE IT WITH
2.
 STEP 2: MULTIPLY THE ANSWER BY 10.
 FOR EXAMPLE, 48 X 5
 STEP 1: 48/2 = 24
 STEP 2: 24 X 10 = 240
 ONE MORE: 63 X 5
 1) 63/2 = 31.5
 31.5 X 10 = 315
NOW, TRY THESE OUT:
• 56 X 5
• 82 X 5
• 47 X 5
• 72 X 5
2) DIVIDING BY 5

■ STEP 1: TAKE THE NUMBER AND NOW, TRY THESE OUT:


MULTIPLY IT WITH 2.
■ 84 / 5
■ STEP 2: DIVIDE IT WITH 10.
■ 26 / 5
■ FOR EXAMPLE: 74/5
■ 47 / 5
■ 1) 74 X 2 = 148
■ 62 / 5
■ 2) 148 / 10 = 14.8
■ ONE MORE: 39 / 5
■ 1) 39 X 2 = 78
■ 78 / 10 = 7.8
EASY WAY TO REMEMBER THIS:

WHEN IT IS AKED TO MULTIPLY BY 5:


FIRST DIVIDE WITH 2 AND THEN MULTIPLY BY
10
AND WHEN IT IS ASKED TO DIVIDE BY 5:
FIRST DIVIDE BY 10 AND THEN MULTIPLY BY 2

THE SAME RULE…

■ THE FIRST TWO TECHNIQUES CAN ALSO BE USED FOR MULTIPLYING OR


DIVIDING ANY POWER OF 5 i.e. 25, 125 OR 3125.
■ ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO BE DONE IS TO JUST FOLLOW THE STEPS THE
NUMBER OF TIMES AS PER THE POWER.
■ E.G. 1) 48 X 25
■ 1. 48 / 2 / 2 = 12
■ 12 X 10 X 10 = 1200
■ 2) 74 / 25
■ 1. 74 X 2 X 2 = 296
■ 296 / 10 / 10 = 2.96
3) MULTIPLICATION WITH 11

• Let us try to multiply 23 with 11


• 23 X 11
• Write 2 on the hundredth’s place
• Write 3 on the one’s place
• For the tenth’s place, simply add the ones and the hundredth’s place i.e. 2+3=5
• Therefore, the answer is 253.

• If any of the digit exceeds 9, carry over the ten’s digit to the next place.
One more:
• Let us try to multiply 175 with 11
• 175 X 11
• Write 5 at the unit’s place.
• Ten’s place: 5+7=12
So, we’ll have 2 at tens digit and 1 will be carried over.
• Hundred’s place: 7+1+1=9
• Thousands place: 1
• Therefore, the answer is 1925.

4) MULTIPLICATION WITH 15
– STEP 1:DIVIDE THE NUMBER BY 2.
– STEP 2: ADD THE RESULT WITH THE NUMBER TO BE MULTIPLIED WITH 15.
– STEP 3: MULTIPLY THE ANSWER WITH 10.
– FOR EXAMPLE: 12 X 15
– 12 / 2 = 6
– 12 + 6 =18
– 18 X 10 = 180
ONE MORE:
– 57 X 15
– 57 / 2 = 28.5
– 57 + 28.5 = 85.5
– 85.5 X 10 = 855

NOW, TRY THESE OUT:


• 18 X 15
• 66 X 15
• 23 X 15
• 82 x 15
5)MULTIPLICATION OF ANY TWO DIGIT
NUMBERS FROM 11 TO 19…
 STEP 1:ADD THE UNIT DIGIT OF THE SMALLER NUMBER TO THE LARGER NUMBER.
 STEP 2:MULTIPLY THE RESULT BY 10
 STEP 3:MULTIPLY THE UNIT DIGIT OF BOTH THE NUMBERS
 STEP 4:ADD THIS NUMBER TO THE RESULT OBTAINED IN STEP 2.
 EXAMPLE: 13 X 16
 1) 16 + 3 = 19
 19 X 10 = 190
 3 X 6 = 18
 190 + 18 = 208
 SO, THE ANSWER IS 208.
ONE MORE:
 17 X 19
 STEP 1) 19 + 7 = 26
 26 X 10 = 260
 7 X 9 = 63
 260 + 63 =323

NOW, TRY THESE OUT:


• 12 X 17
• 16 X 14
• 13 X 19
• 18 X 12
6) SQUARING A TWO DIGIT NUMBER

 FIRST OF ALL, SQUARE BOTH THE TEN’S AND THE UNIT’S PLACE INDIVIDUALLY AND
COMBINE THEM:
 THEN, UNIT’S DIGIT X TEN’S DIGIT X 2 X10
 ADD THEM UP AS SHOWN BELOW:
 FOR EXAMPLE : 53
 1) 5 X 5 = 25
 3 X 3 = 09
 2) 5 X 3 X 2 X 10 =300

 22 8 0 9
 TTHEREFORE, ANSWER IS 2809
 ONE MORE: 34
 1) 3 X 3 = 09
 4 X 4 = 16

7) SQUARING A 3 DIGIT NUMBER WITH 0 IN
THE MIDDLE
 1) Pick the digit at the hundredth’s place and square it.
 2) Then, multiply: digit at hundred’s place X multiply digit at one’s place x 2
 Square the digit at the one’s place.
 Combine them and get the answer.
 For eg. 409
 1) 4 X 4 = 16
 2) 2 X 4 X 9 =72
 9 X 9 =81
 THE ANSWER IS 167281.
 ONE MORE:
 EG. 905
 STEP 1) 9 X 9 = 81
 STEP 2) 2 X 9 X 5 = 90
 STEP 3) 5 X 5 = 25
 Therefore, the answer is 819025.

8) SQUARING A TWO DIGIT ENDING WITH 5

• STEP 1: PICK THE NUMBER AND THE TEN’S PLACE AND MULTIPLY IT
WITH THE NEXT NATURALLY OCCURING NUMBER.
• STEP 2: JOIN IT WITH 25.
• EG. 75 X 75
• 7 X 8 = 56
• ANSWER = 5625
• ONE MORE:

• 35 X 35
• 3 X 4 = 12
• 1225 IS YOUR ANSWER

NOW, TRY THESE OUT:

9) SUBTRACTION FROM 1000, 10000,
100000, ETC..
• SUBTRACT ALL THE DIGITS EXCEPT THE UNIT DIGIT FROM 9.
• SUBTRACT THE UNIT DIGIT FROM 10 AND GET YOUR FINAL ANSWER.
• FOR EXAMPLE, 1000 – 389
• 9–3=6
• 9–8=1
• 10 – 9 = 1
• THEREFORE, THE ANSWER IS 611.
• ONE MORE EXAMPLE:
• 10000 – 6974
• 9–6=3
• 9–9=0
• 9–7=2
• 10 – 4 = 6
• THEREFORE, THE ANSWER IS 3026.
10) MULTIPLICATION OF ANY 3 DIGIT NUMBER WHICH HAVE THE SAME HUNDRED’S
DIGIT

• LET US DO THIS WITH AN EXAMPLE:


• 306 X 308
• SUBTRACT THE UNIT’S DIGIT FROM THE ACTUAL NUMBER
• 306-6=300, 308-8=300
• NOW, ADD THE UNIT DIGIT OF THE SMALLER NUMBER WITH THE LARGER NUMBER OR VICE-VERSA I.E. 308 + 6
= 314

• MULTIPLY 314 WITH 300 (I.E. THE DIFFERENCE) WHICH GIVES IS 94200
• MULTIPLY BOTH THE UNIT’S DIGITS 6 X 8 = 48
• ADD THE RESULTS OF THE LAST TWO STEPS 94200 + 48 = 94248
• LET US NOW HAVE 803 X 817
• 803 – 3 = 800, 817 – 17 = 800
• 817 + 3 = 820
• 820 X 800 = 656000
• 17 X 3 = 51
• THEREFORE, ANSWER IS 656051.
