Wood Working Machines

08/01/2022
PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 2
Woodworking Machines
Are machine used to facilitate different woodworking processes
including sawing, planning, drilling, shaping etc. They make
these woodworking processes much faster, easier and accurate.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 3

Classification of Woodworking Machines
According to the work they perform, woodworking machines
can be classified as;
i. Sawing Machines
ii. Planning Machines
iii. Drilling Machines
iv. Sanding Machine
v. Wood turning machines

Sawing Machines
1. Band Saw Machine

Is used in ripping, cross cutting,

cutting curves, resawing etc.

Band Saw Blade
Band saw blades are hooked
facing downward towards the
material you are cutting.

By design, band saw blades

will hold the material you are
cutting on the cutting table.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 7

Band Saw Safety

Your fingers needs to be at least

2” from the blade at all times.

Never allow your fingers into

the red insert, the “Circle of
Danger” while the saw is
running.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 8

Band Saw Safety…cont

 Adjust the blade guards to

within 1/8” to ¼” of the
stock.
SAFE

 Blade guards that are over

¼ inch above the work will
lead to accidents and
reduces the accuracy of
your cut.
This is UNSAFE!

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 9

Band Saw Safety…cont

 Maintain the stock flat on

the table.
SAFE

 Never hold the stock

‘above’ the table, the
material must remain flat on
the table surface at all times.
This is UNSAFE!

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 10

Band Saw Safety…cont
This is UNSAFE!

 Always wear your safety

goggles

 Never put your hands in

line with the blade
SAFE

 You must make “relief cuts”

whenever you are making
“tight” or small curved cuts.
SAFE

Sawing Machines
2. Circular Saw Machine
A circular saw is a power-saw
using a toothed blade to cut
different materials using a rotary
motion.

Planing Machines
1. Surface Planing/Jointer
Machine
Are used to create a perfectly flat
surface on one side of a rough
board. It can also be used to
create a second perfectly flat
edge at 90 degrees to the first flat
surface.

Operation Procedures

When creating a face plane make sure the cupped side is down
to ensure the material has two contact points on the table

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 15

Operation Procedures
 Adjust the in-feed table to the preferred depth of cut. The MAXIMUM safe cut on the
jointer when jointing the face of the material is 1/16 of an inch.
 Stock less than 11” must not be run through the jointer. Set the push platen on top of
the material making sure the heel of the platen catches the end of the material. Turn the
machine on.
 Manually move the guard, and let it rest on the edge of your material before you feed it
into the cutterhead.
 Keep both hands on the push platen as you slowly slide the material through the
cutterhead.
 Slide the material across the table until the guard retracts against the fence.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 16

Safety
 Wear your safety glasses at all times

 Take off all jewelry

 Do not wear loose clothing

 Make sure you are the only person in the safety zone when operating the jointer.
 Never set material on the tables of the jointer

 Never stand directly behind the machine

 Always joint material with the grain

 Never joint the end grain of material

 The operator should always do the jointing operation himself/herself

 The operator should never pass his/her hands over the cutter head.

Usefull tips
Measure the thickness of your stock and adjust the planer to remove 1/16”
of material thickness.
The JOINTED or SMOOTH face of your stock must be facing DOWN
when you plane for the first time.
Rotate the hand wheel on the side of the planer by 1/3 of a turn to reduce
stock thickness until proper thickness is achieved.
When planing short pieces (ie. 16” to 12”) put the pieces through end to
end so they push each other through the planer.
Plane all your stock at the same time to ensure equal thickness.
Ask for a help when planing long boards.
Check your stock for nails and loose knots.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 19

Specific safety rules

Stock must be at least 12” long to go through the GENERAL planer.

Plane thickest board first. Never plane more than one thickness at a time.

Never stand directly behind, always off to one side in case of kick back.

Let go of the stock / board after it starts through the planer.

Never look into the planer.

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 20

Why is a thickness planer not able to
straighten a warped board?
Cutter Head
In Feed
Out Feed Roller
BECAUSE…..
Roller

The Cutterhead is mounted above the

table. Stock

Only the top of the stock is surfaced.

Feed
Direction

08/01/2022 PREPARED BY: CARPENTRY WORKSHOP 21

Briefly explain how FEED SPEED
affects surface finish?
Faster feed = fewer knife marks/inch
= rougher surface quality

Slower feed = more knife marks /inch

= smoother surface quality

Drilling Machines
1. Vertical Drilling
Machine
A drilling machine, called a
drill press, is used to cut
holes into or through metal,
wood, or other materials
