Shop practice No. 1

Dust Pan

OBJECTIVE:

1. To be able to make a dust pan.

2. To familiarize the students to use a bending machine.
3. To apply other methods of bending.
4. To enable the students to know other types of hand tools.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Proper utilization and standardization of cutting commercial size of tin sheet that is a
significant factor in cast reduction of any project. Have knowledge of working with plan and
layout in order to produce a good quality project.

MATERIALS:

1 piece 12 x 12 tin sheet

1 piece 1 x 2 x 2.8 wood
2 pieces of blind rivet for riveting

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Tin-snip – for cutting tin sheets of metal with gauge 18 and higher

Backsaw – for cutting woods

Plane – for reducing and smoothing surface

Hammer

Flat File

Drill Press

Bender – Manual

Riveter

Drill Bit 1/8

PROCEDURE:

1. Make a pattern drawing of a dust pan.

2. Transfer the pattern drawing in a 12” x 12” G.I. sheet.

3. Cut the G.I. sheet with a tin snip.

4. Using a bender, bend all the possible portion that a bender can accommodate. The
remaining bend use the mallet and straight wedge for bending.

5. Cut a 1 ½” x 5/8” x 28” wood. Smooth the surface of the wood and tapered it by 7.5 x 8.5
face width.
6. At the end of the 7.5 x 9.4, cut it in the mid section at least 2 depth.

7. Then attach the wooden handle to the folded G.I. Sheet by means of a rivet. Finish.

QUESTIONS

1. What is a tin snip?

- Tin snips are an essential tool for cutting sheet metal. Professionals and hobbyist’s use
tin snips to cut different sizes and shapes when working on various projects. Tin snips
are similar to shears or scissors but are more heavy duty.

2. Why is there a need of clipping the edges of the dust pan?

- Clipping is needed in order to prevent any sharp edges from the dust pan which can
cause wounds specially cuts to the user.

3. Is there a need of flaring out the front side of the dust pan?

- Yes, because the flaring out of the front side makes the collections of dirt easier. This
prevents the dirt from going to the bottom of the dust pan.

4. To avoid breaking out the wood edge while riveting, what is the best thing to do?

- To avoid breakage of the wood it is recommended that the wood must be placed in a flat
surface and then be applied by pressure.

5. Why do you use a mallet in pounding a G.I. sheet?

- This allow us to shape the G.I. sheet into the desired form without damaging it.
6. How many 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet you can cut out of 4 feet by 8 feet
standard G.I sheet?

- 4ft x 8ft = 32ft. squared; 12in x 12in = 1ft x 1ft

- Therefore, we can cut 32 sheets of 12in x 12in of G.I. sheet.

7. Name two other ways for bending G.I. sheet.

- The two other ways for bending G.I. sheet are through the usage of grinder to create
grooves in the sheet for bending and by using roll bending

8. What will happen when you attached a longer handle to the dust pan?

- Additional strain will be added on the part where it is attached to. Also, if the handle is
too long, there a tendency that the dust pan will fall off.

9. Why is there a need to tapered the handle?

- The tapering reduces the weight of the handle of the dust pan. It also removes the sharp
edges of the wood which enables easier gripping of the handle.

10. What is the use of a flat nose vise grip?

- The flat nose vice grip is a good tool for holding flat surfaces together with sufficient
pressure that the work piece cannot move while you are working on it
DISCUSSION:

The first project that was to be made was a dust pan. We were given the proper tools and a
G.I. sheet for the project. First, we were asked to trace the pattern that was given to us in the
G.I. sheet. Then we used tin snip to cut all the parts that are not needed and then were taught
how to handle the bender which we used to bend the G.I. sheet. Also, we were to make a
wooden handle in which we used a smoothing plane and a flat file to remove the edges. The
saw the bottom of the handle to a certain depth and attached the G.I. sheet that was bended and
then drill and rivet the holes that was drilled at the bottom and drilled another hole near the top
so that the dust pan can be hanged.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:

After this shop practice, workers were able to make outside and inside caliper using a flat
bar and tools and equipment in the laboratory. The workers were able to familiarize themselves
with the common tools used in the metal shop. The workers were able to explore different
techniques on how to bend a flat bar using ball-peen hammer. Also, the workers were able to
practice different mounting techniques with the bench press.

In order to achieve the desired output of the dust pan, carefully trace the template to the
metal sheet. The layout must be perfect and accurate. In using bending machine, use adequate
force so that the metal sheet can be bended easily but too much force exerted may break the
metal sheet. Always follow instruction and measurements accurately to achieve the desired
output of the Shop Exercise.
