Tank Vent Heads Maintenance The purpose of the air vent head is:
1)To prevent the free entry of water into the tanks
2)To allow the passage of air or liquid to prevent excessive pressure or vacuum coming on the tank. Tank Vent Heads Maintenance Defective air vent heads are a common observation on most of Our Vessels.
1)Safety: A Defective vent head is a safety Hazard
for the Vessel by a) Over Pressurizing due to overflowing the tank during ballasting (Tank Damage) b) Vacuum due to deballasting (Tank Damage) c) Inflow of Water due to heavy weather (Loss of Stability, Ship may sink) 2)PSC: It is a detainable deficiency during a PSC Inspection. Tank Vent Heads Maintenance Tank Vent Heads Maintenance Tank Vent Heads Maintenance The main reasons of a malfunctioning is lack of Inspection & maintenance. This will result in:
1)Broken guide pins in way of welding to float due
to corrosion. 2)Cracked/holed & corroded Float 3)Housing Internal corrosion. 4)Rubber seat coming out from place due to internal corrosion of excessive water pressure during tank overflowing, which makes the float stuck & unable to operate. Tank Vent Heads Maintenance Maintenance Criteria: AA) Once in a Year: Inspection of Inside condition after removing the cover & check for: 1)Rust & Dirt: 2)Condition of parts ( float/ball/disc, guiding pin, seat and wire mesh, if installed). BB) Every 3 Months: Float functioning. Condition of pipe for corrosion and holes Check on cover-tightness for Gooseneck Type
Any replacement vent head should be approved type &
