The purpose of the air vent head is:

1)To prevent the free entry of water into the tanks


2)To allow the passage of air or liquid to prevent
excessive pressure or vacuum coming on the tank.
Tank Vent Heads Maintenance
Defective air vent heads are a common observation
on most of Our Vessels.

1)Safety: A Defective vent head is a safety Hazard


for the Vessel by
a) Over Pressurizing due to overflowing the
tank during ballasting (Tank Damage)
b) Vacuum due to deballasting (Tank Damage)
c) Inflow of Water due to heavy weather (Loss
of Stability, Ship may sink)
2)PSC: It is a detainable deficiency during a PSC
Inspection.

The main reasons of a malfunctioning is lack of
Inspection & maintenance. This will result in:

1)Broken guide pins in way of welding to float due


to corrosion.
2)Cracked/holed & corroded Float
3)Housing Internal corrosion.
4)Rubber seat coming out from place due to
internal corrosion of excessive water pressure
during tank overflowing, which makes the float
stuck & unable to operate.

Maintenance Criteria:
AA) Once in a Year: Inspection of Inside condition after
removing the cover & check for:
1)Rust & Dirt:
2)Condition of parts ( float/ball/disc, guiding pin, seat and
wire mesh, if installed).
BB) Every 3 Months:
Float functioning.
Condition of pipe for corrosion and holes
Check on cover-tightness for Gooseneck Type

Any replacement vent head should be approved type &


same quality & capacity as the original.
