CSEB- COMPRESSED STABILIZED

EARTH BLOCKS
BUILDING THE FUTURE WITH EARTH USING
A “GREENER MATERIAL”

SUBJECT- CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS & MANAGEMENT

PROFESSOR- AR. VISHAL MEHTA SIR.
PRESENTED BY- PRADNYA RAJAN NAIK.
WHAT ARE CSEB?

1. CSEB are a mix of soil, sand, a stabilizer (often 5% of cement), &

water.
2. They are compressed in a press (manual or motorized) & cured
during 28 days.
3. They are not fired !!!

THE AURAM PRESS 3000

4. They can reach a dry compressive strength of 9 Mpa.

5. CSEB are also called E-Blocks, as Eco-friendly, Economical, Earth
blocks.
MIXING 6. Top soil is removed & only deeper soil is extracted.
7. CSEB are used in all continents.
8. CSEB are a major tool for the renaissance of earth architecture
worldwide.
9. It is today the earth technology which is used the most worldwide.
10. The Auram press 3000 can produce about 80 types of blocks with 18
moulds.
MAKING
TYPES OF CSEB-

HOURDI ROOFING

COMP. COLUMN & BEAM

VARIOUS TYPES FO VARIOUS USES-
1. Solid blocks for load bearing masonry.
2. Hollow block for load bearing masonry.
3. Hollow interlocking blocks for disaster resistance.
4. Hourdi for floor & roofs.
5. Round blocks for column.
INTERLOCKING BRICKS 6. Tiles & special blocks.
USE OF CSEB IN CONSTRUCTION SECTOR-
1.Fired bricks & concrete frame are still the most used materials.
2.Following is the market share of regular partition materials.

MATERIAL MIXING
If 50% bricks will get replaced by CSEB, then total carbon emission &
energy consumption will get reduced by approx. 45% (brick manufacturing).
• Market cost of CSEB is 30-40 rs/block
1. Earth blocks India pvt ltd, Bengaluru- 30rs/block
2. M/S horil enterprises, Mumbai/Thane/Pune- 40rs/block
• In Auroville CSEB used as In-situ methode, which is more cost
MANUAL COMPRESSION effective as it saves transportation & use locally available soil.
1. Production Machine’s price ranges from 70,000/- to 1,50,000/-

FULL ASSEMBLY
ADVANTAGES OF CSEB-
A STRONG MATERIAL-
1. Average dry crushing strength of 7.5 Mpa to 9 Mpa.
2. Wet crushing strength of 3 Mpa to 4 Mpa (24 hrs immersion)
LOW INITIAL EMBODIED ENERGY-
3. The initial embodied energy of CSEB is in general less than other building
DRY COMPR. STRENGTH materials
4. Good for overall environmental impact of building materials or systems.
MORE ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY-
5. No firing is required, only curing is sufficient (4 weeks with cement
stabilization).
6. Low carbon dioxide emissions. Cost comparison per cu.m-
COST EFFECTIVE- CSEB wall 24 cm thick
EMB. ENERGY & CO2 7. No plaster is needed in most of cases. = 861 rs/cu.m
8. Less mortar is required & it is cheaper. Fired brick wall 23 cm thick
9. No/less skilled labors are required. = 1076 rs/cu.m
PRICE COMPARISON PROVIDES THERMAL COMFORT-
10. Regulates indoor humidity, helps to achieve thermal comfort.
11. Lesser energy is needed to achieve a comfortable indoor environment.
PLEASING ATMOSPHERE & CREATIVE DESIGN-
12. Can build arches, vaults & domes with various types of CSEB.
13. Can achieve natural, exposed, high quality finishes.
14. Can use in flooring, composite columns & beams.(no need of formwork)
PLEASANT DESIGN
LIMITATIONS/DISADVANTAGES OF CSEB-
NOT SUITABLE FOR HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS & WIDE SPAN-
1. Suitable only for low rise structures up to 3 storey.
2. Suitable for limited spans, up to 5m. (Req. many intermediate supports)
PROPER SOIL IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED-
3. Soil quality checking is required as strength & quality of CSEB is
depends on soil quality itself.
SIEVING OF SOIL 4. Soil should be sieved before mixing.(stones & gravels free)
REQ. QUALITY CHECK AT EVERY STAGE OF MANUFACTURING-
5. Manufacturing process should be properly monitored as a small
mistake in any stage leads to poor quality & strength.
LENGTHY MANUFACTURING PROCESS-
6. Minimum 28 days are required to complete curing process & get
required strength in each block.
CURING OF CSEB TRAINING IS REQUIRED TO CAST & BUILD CSEB STRUCTURES-
7. A proper awareness about CSEB, its manufacturing & construction is
required to get maximum benefits from it.
8. Many workshops & training programms were arranged by Auroville
earth institute which makes Auroville a place who successfully adopted
CSEB techniques.
9. Process requires skilled labours but teaching skills is easy.
For framed structure, CSEB can be used as filler material but the
structural members sizes get increased due to increase in the
LARGE STRUC. MEMBERS block weigth (dead load increased).
CONCLUSION-
IT IS A SUSTAINABLE, ECONOMICAL & ECO FRIENDLY
BUILDING MATERIAL-
1. It is economical to use CSEB instead of normal bricks at least for low
rise & small scale buildings which will reduce considerable amount of
CO2 emission & energy consumption.
EASY & SIMPLE TECHNOLOGY-
SYMBIOSIS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL 2. It is a easily adoptable technique of construction, if get properly teach,
can generate local employment in many villages.
REDUCED DEPENDANCY ON IMPORT OF BRICKS-
3. Which reduce transportation cost & also carbon emission due to
vehicular transport.
MAKES HOUSING AFFORDABLE-
4. On site manufacturing & easily locally available materials can reduced a
EARTH DOME IN GERMANY considerable amount of cost, provide strength as well as aesthetics.

Therefore, production & construction with CSEB is relevant & it is to be adopted where ever
possible especially in village areas where main focus is on individual small housings.
