Persuasion
• Persuasion is convincing others to change their point of
view, agree to a commitment, purchase a product or
service, or take a course of action. Oral and written
persuasive skills are valued in the workplace.
Types
• There are four main types of persuasion:
• ethos
• pathos
• logos
• kairos
• Ethos is the persuasive technique that appeals to a
person's ethical considerations. This technique focuses on
the speaker establishing a sense of credibility.

• The persuader wants to appear intelligent and trustworthy

Types
• Pathos focuses on playing to the individual's emotions.
Pathos is effective because humans are emotional
creatures. Gaining sympathy from the other person is
achieved when the orator uses descriptive language, tells
relatable stories, or has visual aids.
Types
• Logos is the use of reason, logic, and knowledge to
convince another person of a different viewpoint. This is a
highly effective persuasive technique, as it utilizes
evidence to prove a point. A person uses logos when they
cite a source, state a fact, or use a logical argument.
Types
• Kairos is when a person uses the timing of a situation to
create a persuasive moment. It is based on the individual
creating a sense of urgency with the other person.
How Persuasion Works

• Persuasion is an innate personality trait in some, but it's

also a skill that can be learned and improved
How Persuasion Works

• Assess the Needs of Your Target Audience

• In some cases, you may already know what your
audience needs. In other cases, you may need to do
research.
How Persuasion Works

• Build Connection With Your Audience

• To be persuasive, your audience needs to feel you have
their best interests in mind. That takes trust, and trust
takes time to build.
How Persuasion Works

• Focus on the Benefits

• Showcase the benefits of adopting your proposal. Be
specific about how the action or change in viewpoint will
help your audience.
How Persuasion Works

• Prepare
• Prepare for possible objections and listen to ones that
come up on the spot. Objections will be easier to
overcome if you’ve clearly made an effort to listen to and
respect other people’s concerns
