INTRODUCTION
“Improving ourselves by
learning from others”.
WHY DO WE DO BENCH
MARKING
• Why are others better?
• How are others better?
• What can we learn?
• How can we catch up?
• How can we become the best in our industry?
A STEP – STEP APPROACH TO
BENCH MARKING

DATA
The HSE publication Health and Safety Benchmarking – Improving Together (IND
G301/1999) defines health and safety benchmarking as a planned process by which an
organization compares its health and safety processes and performance with others to
learn how to:
• reduce accidents and ill-health;
• improve compliance with health and safety law; and/or
• cut compliance costs.
TYPES OF BENCH MARKING
On the basis of “WHAT” is being compared with other organization and “WHO” is
being compared with our organizations, we can easily classify benchmarking.
There is certain drawback of benchmarking, but they are very few. The advantages
outweigh the disadvantages, but it is significant to know and consider the probable
disadvantages so in which corrective measures could be planned and implemented to
minimize the impact of drawback. The few general disadvantages are as follows:
• Difficulties getting agreement on what indicators are to be used.
• Difficulties in defining the data.
• Provides only limited information about how to correct performance shortfalls.
• The projects could be completed quickly but the results might take much longer
time.
• Highly ambitious goals might lead to unsuccessful benchmarking process.
• Several organizations prevent the procedure lest their weaknesses be exposed to
their competitors.
• Cultural differences might, lead to some difficulties in applying best practices as
happening MNCs.
KEY BENEFITS OF BENCH
MARKING
In addition to helping companies become more efficient and profitable, benchmarking
has other benefits, too, such as:
•Improving employee understanding of cost structures and internal processes
•Encouraging team-building and cooperation in the interests of becoming more
competitive
•Enhancing familiarity with key performance metrics and opportunities for improvement
