UNIT 2:

Earth
layers
4TH GRADE
Miss Constanza Filla Y.
Unit objectives
1. Describe and compare the layers of Earth.

2. Explain and describe the changes to Earth’s surface in relation to

its layers and tectonic plates.

3. Propose prevention and safety measures to prepare for a natural

disaster.

4. Communicate explanations and observations about volcanic

eruption using diagrams.
Main aim: to communicate information about
earthquakes.

Geosphere’s layers
Let’s what this
video about the
layers of the
Earth
The geosphere has three main layers:

1 ● The continents, mountain and

Crust ocean floor are part of it.
● It is the outer layer of
Geosphere.

● Made of solid materials

like rock.
● It comes after the core.
● It is principally formed by
2 Mantl solid rock
● Its temperature varies
e from 400°C near to the
crust to 3300°C near the
core
● It is the deepest layer, divided
into outer core (liquid) and inner
core (solid)

● It is the thickest and hottest

Core layer of the Earth.

● It is believed to be
made up of iron and
nickel.

Main aim: understand how tectonic plates affect Earth and Chile.

TECTONIC PLATES
What are the tectonic plates?
It is important to know that:
❖ The lithosphere is the outer part of the Earth, and it is made up of: the
oceanic crust, the continental crust and the upper part of the mantle.

❖ It is not a solid surface and it is composed of different parts that fit

like a puzzle.

❖ These parts are the tectonic plates.

❖ The movement of these plates

produces slow changes on Earth, such
as the formation of volcanoes and
mountains, or fast changes such as
earthquakes and tsunamis.

❖ They are in constant motion (always

moving)
