Reminder
What is a Femtocell?
• Small Cells based on the Femto-cell technology are:
• Scaled down, low power, lightweight wireless access base stations
• located typically within homes, offices, buildings, coffee shops, retail stores…
• Usually installed by consumers, locally powered and connected to a subscribers’ fixed broadband (e.g. xDSL, PON, cable…)
connection for backhaul to the operator’s network.
• Only requirement for the consumer to deploy this product is to have an existing IP connectivity (assuming a proper backhaul
QoS)
• In Nokia our current Femtocell portfolio is divided in two main segments: Home & Enterprise

Nokia Femto Cells positioning in the Small Cells portfolio
Femto vs Pico cells
Nokia Small Cell indoor portfolio can be divided in two types of products:

Femto cells “ FlexiZone Pico cells

Those two type of indoor APs are both meant to bring coverage and capacity in indoor environments but their use cases might differ depending on
the customer experience drivers and the benefits researched by the operator and his existing installed base

Pico & Femto Use Cases
Femto Use Cases
• Improve/resolve residential coverage issues
• Small offices with consumer led installation (<3 APs)
High Coverage • Small to medium offices which are poorly covered from
Area/Complexity
Stadiums / Macro and therefore have few areas of Femto/Macro
Sports arenas handover. (less than 10 Aps)
Shopping • Small warehouses & factories with poor coverage from
Factories / Malls
Warehouses
macro (less than 10 APs)
Transport Hubs
Large Office
buildings Any venues Pico Use Cases
Low using MOCN High
Capacity Medium Office Capacity • Any High Capacity or high interaction with Macro such
buildings as Stadiums, Shopping malls, airports, etc.
Small Office FZ Pico • Transportation hubs which typically have high capacity
buildings Femto and significant interaction/mobility w/ macro
Low Coverage
• Any use case which requires MOCN resulting in higher
Residential
Area/Complexity capacity requirements than femto supports
• Large area deployments due to higher power and macro
based scheduler and features (i.e., Large office
buildings, large warehouses, etc.)

NCM for Femto Cells
• NetGuard Certificate Manager (NCM) is an optional Network Element in the Femto Cell architecture. NCM provides a 3GPP
compliant solution for certificate lifecycle management (PKI) to allow to identify the Femto APs and to setup a secured
communication via IPSec tunnels.

• NCM is the Nokia reference PKI product to use in Femto offers and belongs to AA BG. NCM supports all the Nokia Femto
products and Nokia’s 7750-SR SeGW.
