MERCURY
CHARACTERISTICS OF MERCURY
• The smallest planet
• It is also shrinking
• Bigger 40% than the moon
• The closest planet to the sun, but it’s not the hottest planet
• Mercury has the most craters in the Solar System
• Mercury orbits the Sun faster than any other planet
• A year on Mercury lasts 88 earth day
EARTH
CHARACTERISTICS OF
EARTH
• Perfect tilt and spin 2.35 degrees
• Earth’s atmosphere protects us from a daily barrage of
millions of meteoroids, ranging in size from tiny particles
to boulders
• Natural cycles: (a) The water (hydrologic) cycle
(b) The carbon and oxygen cycles
• More than 71% of the earth is covered in water and 29%
land
VENUS
CHARACTERISTIC OF
VENUS
Second closet planet to the sun
Knows as “GREENHOUSE”
Rotates from east to west
Size and age are same with Earth
Temperature of approximately 460°C
MARS
CHARACTERISTICS OF MARS
 Fourth planet from the sun
 Knows As “RED PLANET”
 Has two moon (Phobos& Demos)
 Surface area that is only 25% that of the Earth
 Mass is 10% that of the Earth
 Atmosphere can be divided into two different areas
JUPITER
CHARACTERISTICS OF JUPITER
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun
The largest in the Solar System
Jupiter is called a gas giant planet
Its atmosphere is made up of mostly
hydrogen gas and helium gas, like the sun
The planet is covered in thick red, brown,
yellow and white clouds
SATURN
CHARACTERISTICS OF
SATURN
Sixth planet from the Sun
Second largest planet in the Solar System
 Known as the most beautiful planet in the Solar
System
 A gas giant planet
 Made mostly hydrogen and helium
 At least 82 moons are known to orbit Saturn
 The rings are made of icy and rocky remnants
URANUS
CHARACTERISTICS OF URANUS
Seventh planet from the Sun
Has the coldest temperature ever recorded on a planet in Solar
System that is -371℉
Axis of rotation tilted sideways
The core made of iron and magnesium silicate
The surface made of water , ammonia and methane
The atmosphere composed primarily of hydrogen and helium
 13 known rings , inner rings are narrow and dark , outter rings
are brightly coloured
 27 moons are known
NEPTUNE
CHARACTERISTICS OF
NEPTUNE
Eighth and the farest from the Sun
Most distant planet in Solar System
Has the coldest overall average temperature that is around -214 °C
Its heart it’s a solid core about 1.5 of Earth
The core is made up of water, ice, and silicate rock
The surface is made up of a hot pressurized ocean water , methane
and ammonia ices
The atmosphere predominantly made of hydrogen and helium,
include traces of methane
14 moons are know
SUN
CHARACTERISTICS OF SUN
 Sun is the star at the centre of the Solar System
 Sun is a massive ball of gases
 Composition of the Sun: (a) Hydrogen (91%)
(b) Helium (8.9%)
(c) Heavier elements (0.1%)
 Sun is classified as a G-class dwarf star
 Matter at the centre of the Sun is denser compared to Earth’s
rock or steel.
STRUCTURE OF SUN
GALAXY
Three type:

a) Elliptical Galaxy
b) Spiral Galaxy
c)Irregular Galaxy
CHARACTERISTICS OF
ELLIPTICAL GALAXY
 Elliptical shape galaxy. The galaxy also looks like a circle and
almost falt from the perspective of an astronomer
Elliptical galaxies are believed to be made up of old stars.
Example: M89 M105
CHARACTERISTICS OF
SPIRAL GALAXY
 This galaxy is shape like a disc with arms spiralling outwards
It is made up of star that rotate at high speed. The younger stars
are located at the spiral while the older stars are found in the
middle
Example: M101 M31
CHARACTERISTICS OF
IRREGULAR GALAXY
 An irregular galaxy is a galaxy that does not have a distinct regular
shape, unlike a spiral or an elliptical galaxy
 Irregular galaxies do not fall into any of the regular classes of the
Hubble sequence, and they are often chaotic in appearance, with
neither a nuclear bulge nor any trace of spiral arm structure
 Example: NGC1427A IC3583
