canal ,which is about 650 km long.
-Irrigation by canals

 Canal irrigation is nothing but,Supplying of water to the

fields to perform irrigation by canals.

 The water in the canal flows by action of gravity.

TYPES OF CANALS
(Based on functions of canal)

1. Irrigation canal.
2. Power canal.
3. Feeder canal.
4. Carrier canal.
5. Navigation canal.
1. Irrigation canal
 It is a canal which is used to irrigate the
agricultural fields.
2.Power canal
 A canal constructed especially for the generation of
hydraulicpower is termed as the power canal.
3. Feeder canal
 As the name says , a feeder canal is constructed to feed
two or more other canals.
4.Navigation canal
 A canal which is constructed especially for
navigation purpose ,the water level Should be a
lot higher to accommodate large ships and
vessels.

 A carrier canal is a multifunctional canal which is used for
both irrigation and feeder
canal.
 About 15.8 Million hectares of area is irrigated by the canal
irrigation in india.

 So the main canal irrigated areas are in the

northern Plains of India.

 The maximum part of the entire irrigated

 area of the country by canals is in “Uttarpradesh”.
-Canal lining -

 Canal lining is a protective layer in canal which resist

the flow of water through it’s bed and sides.

 The main advantage of canal lining is to protect the water

from seepage loss .
 In karimnagar district there are three
