NATURE AND FORMS OF CORROSION

1)ATMOSPHERIC CORROSION:
Serious rusting occurs when relative humidity is
above about 70 %
2)BIMETALLIC (GALVANIC) CORROSION
When two different metals come in contact , corrosion
cell is formed and the less noble metal rusts.
3)STRESS CORROSION
Corrosion of fractures or cracks which expose bare
metal , on ships structures due to stresses .

CORROSION FORMS

4) Corrosion / erosion E.g. Sea water

discharges from the hull .
5)CORROSION DUE TO IMMERSION
When in ballast , some portion of ships hull is
exposed out of water , which may corrode
due to presence of oxygen if not properly
painted.

CORROSION CONTROL
CATHODIC PROTECTION
(1) Sacrificial Anode (zinc alloys) Systems
Sacrificial anodes are fitted in ballast tanks, around
propellers , will be consumed in the process and
require replacement for the protection to be
maintained

(2) IMPRESSED CURRENT SYSTEMS

Protection of the immersed external hull only. voltage

difference is maintained between the hull and fitted
anodes. Potential difference is maintained by means
of an externally mounted silver chloride reference
cell . Using the amplified DC signal from the controller
a larger current from the ship’s electrical system is
supplied to the hull anodes, which reverses the
corrosion currents.

PROTECTIVE COATINGS (PAINTS)

• Anti-fouling Systems :The immersed hull and

fittings of a ship at sea, are subject to algae,
barnacle and other shellfish growth that can impair
its hydrodynamic performance and adversely affect
the service of the immersed fittings.

BALLAST TANKS PAINTS :EPOXY RESINS

CHEMICALS
These paints have very good adhesion, apart from
their excellent chemical resistance. These paints
often consist of a ‘two-pack’ formulation, a solution
of epoxy resin together with a solution of cold
curing agent. Suitable for Ballast tanks.
