Remote Internship Challenges for Accountancy Students

This document discusses a study on the limitations of remote internships for accounting students at Wesleyan University of the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. It outlines the objectives to assess challenges students face in remote internships and their impact on career readiness. The theoretical framework draws from Kolb's experiential learning cycle. A survey will be used to understand communication, workstation, relationships and organizational awareness challenges. Statistical tests like weighted mean, t-test and ANOVA will analyze data on career readiness when shifting to remote internships. The findings intend to aid students, employers and policymakers on managing remote internship limitations.

CAREER READINESS: THE LIMITATIONS IN

RENDERING REMOTE INTERNSHIP ON

ACCOUNTANCY STUDENTS IN WESLEYAN
UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Department of Accountancy
OUTLINE
A - Introduction
B - Objectives
C - Frameworks
D - Statement of the Problem
E - Hypothesis
F - Significance of the Study
G - Scope and Delimitation
H - Statistical Approach
INTRODUCTION
The global pandemic that started in 2020 brought impacts
to all aspects of activities, may it be business, lifestyle,
education, environment, or economy. The students have
hugely taken the consequences of this event as the traditional
education system shifted to computer-based learning where
everything happens on screen. This is also why college
undergraduate students may now take their internship
remotely.
REMOTE INTERNSHIP
Due to the never ending cases of coronavirus in the Philippines,
over 100 companies in the country offer remote internships for the
field of accountancy. This type of internship is where the student can
work anywhere outside the actual office, mainly a Work From Home
(WFH) type of internship. The student communicates with
employers through various resources such as Zoom, Microsoft
teams, Skype, Emails, Webinars, whichever is applicable. A
predominantly computer-mediated interaction between the student
intern and employer will take place in this kind of internship.
CAREER READINESS
National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) (2015)
defined career readiness as a foundation for demonstrating required
core competencies that widely prepare college students for
workplace success and established career management. Career
readiness is important for employers in sourcing talent as it allows
them to identify key skills and abilities across all job functions. It
also provides employers with a framework for developing talent
through internships and other experiential education programs.
OBJECTIVES OF THE
STUDY
• To assess the challenges of accountancy students in the practice of remote
internship with regard to their field of interests.
• To determine the limitations of shifting and rendering remote internship
program to accountancy students and its impact on career readiness.
• To provide aid and awareness to the people or organization involved by the
scope of the present study.
• To obtain data that will be measured statistically from the respondents with
the utilization of survey questionnaire.
• To provide recommendations on how the limitations of remote internship shall
be managed by the company and interns.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to the following:
1.1 Gender
1.2 Type of company (Private/Public company)
1. 3 Job scope (accounting, auditing, or taxation)
1.4 Duration of Remote Internship (hours required)
2. What are the experiences in the remote internship program of the accounting interns?
3. What are the challenges encountered in the remote internship program in terms of:
3.1 Communication
3.2 Work Station
3.3 Professional Relationship
3.4 Organizational Structure Awareness
4. Is there a relationship between practicing the shift to remote internship and career
readiness?
HYPOTHESIS

Hypothesis: Regressive Career Readiness due to the limitations of

rendering and shifting to remote internship program on accountancy
undergraduate student interns.

Null: The shift to remote internship program has no effect on the career
readiness of accountancy undergraduate student interns?

Alternative: The shift to remote internship program has a significant effect

on the career readiness of accountancy undergraduate student interns?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

• Accounting Interns
• Employers
• Policymakers
• Wesleyan University of the Philippines
• Future Researches and Researchers
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
• The study will mainly focus to the impacts of limitations of rendering remote internship
on career readiness of accounting interns. This includes variables like, communication,
work station, professional relationship, and organization structure awareness which are
under the limitations of remote internship and is an independent variable.

• The student interns from Wesleyan University of the Philippines will be used as target
respondents, since the 4th year students under the program of accountancy have undergone
remote internship.

• The research paper will not assess the advantages and promising practices of remote
internship as the paper will evaluate the effect of limitations of rendering such internship
on the career readiness of the accountancy students in Wesleyan University of the
Philippines.
STATISTICAL APPROACH

• Research Design
Quantitative Descriptive Research
(Sullivan , 2021)
• Sample and Sampling Technique
Stratified Purposive Sampling
(Nickolas, 2022)
RESEARCH LOCALE

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researcher used quantitative techniques to verify if

the data collected is true and measurable. The researcher
will use survey questionnaires and it will be based on the
study’s statement of the problem. It will help the researcher
to collect significant data for the study. The questions will
be answered by the respondents using Google Forms and
will be distributed via online platforms.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The survey questionnaire will consist of the following:
1.Profile of the respondents
2.Practice of Remote Internship
3.Challenges of Remote Internship
3.1 Communication
