Background of the Study

Being a working student is a responsibility of many less

fortunate but willing young adults and adult individuals. The
reason is economics- scarcity of funds, scarcity of financial
resources. Working and studying at the same time can augment
the income or there sources for matriculation or other needs
(Velasco, 2014).

This study will be conducted since there is no studies about

working students in the Guimaras State University

The researchers want to determine the challenges

encountered and the coping mechanisms of Guimaras State
University Social Studies Working Students.

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, year level, and
general average?

2. What is the level of challenges encountered of Guimaras State University

Social Studies Working Students as a whole and when classified according to
age, sex, year level, and general average?

3. What is the level of coping mechanisms of Guimaras State University Social

Studies Working Students as a whole and when classified according to age, sex,
year level, and general average?

Theoretical Framework

The Educational Productivity Theory of Walberg’s (1981) as cited by

McGrew (2008).

Walberg had identified key variables that affect student outcomes:

the first three variables (ability, motivation, and age) reflect characteristics of the

student. The fourth and fifth variables reflects instruction (quantity and quality).

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study aims to determine the challenges encountered and the coping
mechanism of social studies students; age, sex, year level , and general
average.

This study will be conducted in Guimaras State University for the school
year 2022-2023.

This study will be conducted through distribution of questionnaire to

the 1st year-4th year college students major in social studies.

The basic problem of working students encountered is the

scheduling of routine. students have t to make schedules, from
time to time, to work out on the multiple tasks. These students
are stressed to complete their all tasks in the given time. They
have to be spontaneous with their work-life as well as student
life.

(Gragnano et al., 2020.Freire et al. (2016) stated that several investigations

have studied the role of psychological well-being; however, this seems to

be a global construct; from a personal perspective, psychological well-

being could greatly assist students’ coping behaviour with rigorous

academic demands.

Working is now a fundamental responsibility for

many undergraduates. But understanding how
employment affects students’ educational experiences is
complicated by why students work. Many students must
work to pay the cost of attending college.

The result of Carney, C., McNeish S.,& McColl, J. study shows that being in debt

and part time working both have a very slight detrimental effect on both mental

and physical health of students.

According to the study of Andrea Faye Coral, et.al (2020) the result shows that in

terms of working students, the weighted mean of the respondents was 3.7, which

strongly agreed that the financial aspect is the major challenge encountered by

working students.

According to Montaner, J. (2020) The results of the study showed that the
working students encountered conflicts in schedule. Hence, students
should know how to manage their time and create plans ahead of time to
utilized their free time productively.
In the study of Marycris Porbile, et. al(2019) one of the reasons why
students needs to work while studying is because of the increasing school
expenses and to help their parents as well. The researchers found out that
the life of working students in school is not easy.

The researcher will use the descriptive method to

determine the challenges encountered and the coping

mechanisms of social studies working students of Guimaras

State University.

Quantitative Research Method will be used in this study.

This school was chosen by the researchers since it is the

only college school in the Province of Guimaras.

1st year to 4th year college students major in Social Studies who

are currently enrolled in 2nd semester in Guimaras State

University of Salvador campus, SY 2022-2023

from this study will be categorized, tabulated, and compared

using both descriptive and statistical tools as appropriate.

The comprehensive information will be analyzed using the

principles of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). In order

to interpret the data that will be gathered, the succeeding statistical

tools used:
