CHAPTER I

Introduction

Stress is a main source of problems being faced by the students during their academic

carrier when they are struggling to get the academic achievements for their future life. Academic

pressure is one of the factors that cause failure among the students. Stress is the response of

mental and action through hormonal signaling, the perception of danger set offs an automatic

response system, known as the fight or flight response. Commonly stress refers to two things, the

psychological perception of pressure, on the one hand, and the body’s response to it, on the

other, which involves multiple system, from breakdown to muscles to memory. Stress is a lot of

expectation from self. Stress is the feeling of strain and pressure. Stress is a threating feeling

(Cohen et al., 1997).

There are things that causing students stress; First, upcoming tests. Many students worry

about getting a good grade or simply making time to study if there is more than one upcoming

test. Second, too much homework. When your child is overwhelmed or frustrated by homework.

Third, a heavy workload. This is especially common for older high school students as they start

making their post-secondary plans. Next, poor sleep schedule. Not getting enough sleeps makes

it difficult for students to concentrate and learn effectively. Lastly, participating in class. For

many students, the thought of getting called in class and speaking in front of their classmates can

be terrifying.

Academic performance is the educational that is achieved by a student, teacher or

institution achieves over a specific time. The academic performance of students heavily depends

upon the parental involvement in their academic activities to attain the higher level of quality in
academic success. The students are quite emotional especially females. They are take stress in

everything at school level. A lot of factor that influence in their study like present pressure,

teacher’s attitude towards their study, home strictness, future and job tensions (Hussain et al.,

2012).

For many young adults, school is the best time of life. These critical years can also be

undermined by depression, anxiety, and stress. Students are very likely to experience some or

many stressors which may test their ability to cope: Adapting to a new environment, balancing a

heavy workload, making new friends, becoming more independent, and dealing with myriad of

other issues.

Statement of the Problem

The present study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the stressors of Grade 10 students of Rodriguez National High School?

2. What are the effects of stress among Grade 10 students of Rodriguez National High

School?

3. How does stress effect the Academic Performance of Grade 10 students of

Rodriguez National High School?


Scope and Delimitation

This Study delimits its coverage to the selected Grade 10 students of Rodriguez National

High School only. Its main purpose is to identify the Impact of Stress of the Academic

Performance of the students and to propose possible solutions regarding these problems.

This study considers every aspects of student’s personal information that has an impact

on their Academic Performances. The students will be interviewed by the researchers and will be

given questions to answer.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study have benefits to the following parties.

Students

They will be benefited from the results of this study by learning the impact of stress to

the academic performances. Also, through this study they will learn how to handle their stress.

Teachers

This study will serve as a guide to the teachers who has a student with low academic

performance in class due to unhappy living from stress.

Parents

The parents of the students that is suffering from stress will have awareness to their

children to guide and help them overcome stress.


School Administration

This study will benefit the School Administration by gaining insights as to how does

stress affect the Academic Performance of the students. The school may raise awareness on how

the students may handle their stress.

Future Researchers

This study will serve as a guide to the researchers that has same topic. Also, this can help

them to improve their study.
