Chapter 1

The PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Ghaerba (2001) a broken home is defined as a condition whereby the family

overwhelmed with the confusion and misconception of marriage and family

structure that leads to the total breakdown of the family. The child’s first place of

interaction with the world is the family. And as a result, the child obtain early

education and socialization from the parents and other members of the family.

Agualana (200) ?? stated that family served as a strong foundation for molding the

total development of a child such as their mental, ethical, emotional, and spiritual

development. A broken home in this setting is referring for being not complete or

intact as a consequences of divorce, separation, death of one parent and

illegitimacy.

Besides, it is said that child, being a piece of a broken family, are enduring five

times than their parents do. Parental division truly causes issues in passionate,

conduct and scholarly angles. Concentrates likewise say that those young people

are more terrible off than those with consistently wedded guardians in terms of

scholarly achievement, direct, mental prosperity, and companion relations

framework. In this manner, it seems like children are most affected of their parent’s
failure to keep up amicable and stable homes (Amato 2007). It is obvious though,

that on a typical the broken home condition has harmful effects. Conflict in a home

is one of the reason that increases the risk of emotional problems and decreases

resistance to stress (Sandstrom 2005) However, even though these children

struggle to live a happy life and suffering many problems it has also a good impact

to them. They may have established a strong personality than others who have

given a chance to live a normal life. Some of the victim of broken home strive hard

in life, have a good academic performance in school for the reason that what

happened to theme they see it as an inspiration to achieve their goal.

The issue on broken home is a universal phenomenal that may arises at different

parts of the world and encountered by the people living in different places including

the students from Nagpayong Senior High School. It was observed that some of the

students come from broken home and they are struggling in their academic

performance due to the situation that confront them, on the contrary some are

showing positive performance in school .

With this occurring issue the study aims to determine and describe the possible

effects of broken home on the academic performance of grade 12 students of

Nagpayong Senior High School and to know how it affects and influence their

academic performance at the same time to give possible recommendation

regarding the problem.

Theoretical Framework

This study is inspired by the theory of Alfred Adler (1896-1934) called “Adler’s

theory of personality”. The core of Adler’s theory of personality is a principle of

creative self, which emphasizes that is the one that is responsible for making his

own character on the view or based on the patterns of inheritance, involvement and

experience. His insight of the nature of personality consequently matches the

famous idea that man can be the master not the victim of his fate. Adler said that

the manifestation of total personality of a man depends upon on the individual style

of life wherein the style of life is referring to the individual distinctive way on how to

react to the situations that challenge him in life. With this idea, it is relatable

therefore to understand the basic principle of development and personality

development.

According to Lawes and Eddy (2006) the basic principles of development have

bounded four basic principles of child development. These are: (1) children have

different level of development, one may develop quickly however others may not.

(2) A child may be differ in his own rate as he grows, he may develop rapidly during

his childhood while others may have little difficulties. (3) Different aspects of growth

may result at different rates, for example mental growth may not be as fast as

physical growth. (4) Child passes the same stage in the same order despite of their

different rates of growth and development, for example each crawls before he

walks, speaks before reading.

This theory generally discusses the different level undergone by an individual when

it comes to personality development they have possesses different process of

developing personality it depends on how they react on the certain situation

meaning the power is on their hand and they are the one that is responsible for the

result of their total personality. In relation to our study, all the victim of the broken

home may not experience the same condition because as stated previously in the

theory that man has different way on how to react on the condition that confront him

in life, other may suffer emotional and behavioral problems that may lead to failure

of academic performance but the rest may view the effect of broken home as

positive that what happened pushes them to strive hard in life.

Through this theory we want to prove whether having a broken home affect the

academic performance and leads to the poor level of achievement of grade 12

students from Nagpayong Senior High School and whether it brings negative or

positive effect to their learnings.

FEEDBACK

FIGURE 1: THE CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM OF STUDY

The input box includes (1) the student- respondent’s demographic profile (age,

gender, and strand, general average and academic achievement in first semester

S.Y. 2018-2019.) (2) number of respondents coming from a broken home (3) Extent

of effect of a broken home to student academic achievement (4) . Strategies used

by the respondents in coping with their problems.

The process box deals with the procedure of gathering data through the use of

survey questionnaire and as a result the data gathered will be the basis for the

interpretation and analysis of data to come up with the comprehensive

presentation.and strong valid findings.

The output box contained the data gathered on (1) Extent of effect of a broken

home to student academic achievement (2) Strategies used by the respondents in

coping with their problems.(3) recomendations for those students coming from

broken home to have better understanding on how to cope up with the problems

they’ve encountered.

Statement of the Problem

This study attempts to find evidence of effect of broken home to the academic

performance of grade 12 students of Nagpayong Senior High School

. More specifically it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Strand

1.4 General Average in first semester S.Y. 2018-2019

1.5 Academic achievement for first semester S.Y. 2018-2019

2. What is the number of respondents coming from a broken home?s

3. To what extent does a broken home affects the student performance?

4. Is there a relationship between a respondents coming from a broken home to

their academic achievement?

5. What are the strategies used by the respondents in coping with their problems?

Scope and Limitations

As the title of the research reads, the research will be limited to only Nagpayong

Senior High School The study is from year 2018- 2019. The resource or material

needed is the General Average of the respondents from 1 st semester. This

study should not gather data from all senior high school students but focuses only

to the selected students. The respondents of this study are selected grade 12

students that come from broken homes.

Significance of the study

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of broken home on academic

performance of grade 12 students of Nagpayong Senior High School, it is hoped

and believed that this study will be a great tool that will serve as a reference and

benefit to the following:

Student.. The study will help the student to be able to understand and how to cope

or adjust to the situation arising from broken homes and that of learning in the

classroom.
Parents. The study is an eye-opener to parents, it will enable them to know the

model they portray before their children, adverse effects of an option for divorce or

separation will be known before taken.

Guidance. In the other hand guidance will also benefit from this study as it will

enable them to understand better on how to handle victims and the types of

attention treatment to be given.

Teachers. As a conventional custodian of socialization would better understand the

victim and his family background and ways to further assisting him towards his

academic performance.

Marriage counselors. The study will also assist marriage counselors better on

how and type of pre-marriage and post marriage counseling to be given to

prospective and qualified parents on how their marital affairs should be handled and

protected by advising parents on life after divorce/separation concerning their

children.

Future researchers. It will be benefit to future researchers having the same topic

as the findings will serve as a source of literature review.
