EFFECTS OF FAMILY PROBLEM ON THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE IN THE MAJOR SUBJECTS OF G12 STUDENTS OF

OUR LADY REMEDIOS MONTESSORI SCHOOL
S.Y 2018-2019

CHAPTER I
Introduction

Student performance in school is not consistent because of varied reasons and

must prominent among them are the problems arising from an ordinary family such as
the divorce of the parents in the family, financial capacity of parents for their children’s
education, and dysfunction within the roles of each members in the family. According to
Dr. Bowen of the University of Tennessee, a family is a system in which each member
had a role to play and rules to respect but due to systematic failure from different
circumstances or perspectives a family’s system in terms of the lack of members to play
a certain role and the disrespect given to the roles in the family, from it the children in
the family is being affected through their daily lives and through their educational
learning performance. The smallest stabled relationship system is the “Triangle”.
Triangles usually have one side in conflict and two sides in harmony, contributing to the
development of clinical problems. In result, nuclear family emotional problems were
being produced within a family inside every community. The Problems existing in some
families that affects students in a family from their learning performance in their
perspective schools is because the lack of culture from the ways of how people
especially adults prepare themselves on parenting or family building in a way that most
people is very spontaneous on how they handle their own individual lives that, more
likely so, future parents doesn’t exactly tend to look at the bigger picture, resulting, a
family that is being developed undergoes improper and indecent process (Family
System Theory)
From the research paper about “Bad Parenting” (www.papermasters.com),
states that; “Bad parenting is a term that can be utilized to encompass a number of
activities that are detrimental to a child and his or her well - being. Most often, bad
parenting is a practice that results in the abuse of the child: either physical abuse,
emotional abuse, sexual abuse or neglect. While it is true that many children that suffer
abuse at the hands of bad parents do grow up to become well-adjusted adults, the
reality is that many are at greater risk for developing behavioral and psychological
problems than children who have not been exposed to this type of environment. By
considering the myriad of situations in which bad parenting, and thus child abuse, can
contribute to the psychological and behavioral problems of child, it is possible to
understand how children can learn to cope and grow into well - adjusted adults”.
In order for children to have a decent learning performance in schools; parents or soon
to be parents or anyone that has the capability to start a family from both in biological
status and financial status should be aware or well oriented on how people is capable
enough of having a kid of their own that needs to be more knowledgeable of how they
could really handle the education for their children. The problems that is being raised up
in family issues that affects the children’s learning performance should be solved
because for the betterment of the so called “the big picture”, meaning, the children from
all families around the world is our future holders of what we can achieve in economy of
in any other perspective from what our world is and what the progress of human kind
lies in.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of family problems on the
academic performance in the major subject of GRD 12 students of Our Lady of
Remedios Montessori school
 Involving parents in learning activities with their children at home is one kind of
parental involvement that many educators believe is an important aspect of the child’s
learning. If the family is undergoing conflict, parents will not have time for their children.

Based upon the research, the IPO Model of John Dewey shows that this is the
actual framework within the nature of the current topic that revolves around the family
issues towards the students that had been performing poorly in their academic works.
Statement of the Problem
This study seeks to determine the effects of family problem on the academic
performance in the major subjects of GRD 12 Students of Our Lady of Remedios
Montessori School.

1.What is the demographic profile of the students of Our Lady of Remedios Montessori
School respondents interms of:
1.1 Age;
1.2 Sex;
1.3 Grade and Section;

2. What are the common problems of the G12 students of Our Lady of Remedios
Montessori School from their families:
2.1 Financial problem
2.2 Separation of parents
2.3 Breakdown in Communication
2.4 Drug addiction
2.5 Gambling

2.6 Sexual harassment

3. What is the academicperformance during the 1rst grading of the students in:
3.1 Mathematics;
3.2 English;
3.3 science;

4. Is there any significant effect of their family problems to the academic performance in
the major subjects of the students? Respondents?
5. What recommendations can be proposed to enhance the academic performance of
the stdent-respondents based on the outcome of the study?
Significance of Study
This study of importance to different individuals who include: to parents ,to the
students, to the teachers, to the future researchers ; in order to make them aware of the
importance of family background in shaping the academic performance of their children;
to the second management in order to enlighten them on the important factors in the
children’s family background so as to be able to deal with or pay more attention to those
factors which many affects adversely the students’ academic performance; the study
will also benefit with other furniture researchers in the same field with the literature to
support their arguments and hence improved knowledge.
To the Students. In order for them to be self – aware about the things that causes
them to have low learning performances in their respective schools or universities, in
that way they can fully grasp the potential to confront their family problems in a proper
and decent ay. Aside from this specific research is for the students themselves, this
study is also for the teachers or the professors in a university or a school for this
research can provide data and analysis that gives background to why some of their
students produces lo learning performances, and so that they will be all to aware how to
approach or help their students in these kinds of situations.
To the Family. This study has the capabilities to inform the parents or the elders
in a family how damaging family in their school learning performances. And lastly, this
research is for the future researchers that will tackle the same topic or idea of family
issues that affects student’s learning performances, because it is to provide the right
kinds of data to gather specific analysis in proving and showing all kinds of sides when it
comes to family problems or issues that has been affecting our future holders which
reduces their performances for the betterment of their future.
To the Teachers. This study is to enlighten them from the current status of some
students who are experiencing family problems or issue that affects their learning
performances in their respective schools or universities, because they need to be well
aware of what their students might be going through in every aspect of their individual
lives.
To the Researchers. This study is for them to use as a guideline on the same
topic they might be researching in terms of family issues in some students that affects
their learning performances.
Scope and Delimination
The coverage of the study is to determine the status or condition of selected GRD
12 TVL students of Our Lady of Remedios Montessori School in terms of how many
students are affected by family problem issues.
Null hypothesis
There is no significant effects.

Definition of Terms

Academic Performance . This refers to the level of attainment on what students have
been able to achieve in terms of learning .

Divorce . The ending of a marriage by a legal process

Family Problem .These are the separation , divorce , alcoholic , abused or abusive
parents, or another family conflict.

Hierarchy . A system in which people or things are placed in a series of levels with
different importance or status .

Insufficiency . Lack of mental or moral fitness

Operational . ready for use able to be used
