Overleaf and ResearchGate:

Uses and Benefits

PRESENTED BY:
BIPONJOT KAUR
PHD SCHOLAR
What is Overleaf ?

 It is a collaborative cloud-based LaTeX editor used for writing, editing and publishing
scientific documents.
 It partners with a wide range of scientific publishers to provide official journal LaTeX
templates, and direct submission links.
 An advanced personal or professional subscription costs money and provides additional
features, such as the following:
 Unlimited collaborators per project
 Document history (going back and forth between document versions)
 Advanced bibliography management (with Mendeley)
 Dropbox sync integration
 GitHub integration
Uses of Overleaf

 Real-time collaboration: It helps you understand what each author is contributing to the
development of a research paper. This, in turn, provides transparency into each author’s
contribution to the project.
 Easy sharing: Want to share your research paper with co-authors, reviewers, instructors, etc.?
It’s simple. Every project you create on Overleaf has a secret link. All you need to do is copy
that link and share it with the respective person to view, comment and edit your document.
 Real-time preview: In Overleaf, you can see real-time changes (or preview) as you write your
document. Essentially, Overleaf compiles your project in the backend for you to see the actual
output.
 Find mistakes quickly: Overleaf highlights spelling errors in red so that authors can quickly
catch them.
 The Writefull Overleaf extension checks grammar and provides phrasing suggestions for your
text. It can correct typos, grammar mistakes, vocabulary issues, punctuation, and more.
 Protected Projects: In Overleaf Pro, you can actually make your projects protected which
means that you choose who will have access to the project. You can add or delete
collaborators anytime you want.
 There are many templates to choose from beyond those for scientific papers. Other
templates include thesis templates, calendar templates, and poster/presentation templates.
 Ensure student authors follow the correct format and guidelines by using the University’s
LaTeX thesis and dissertation templates.
 If an author prefers to work offline he/she can stay in sync with GitHub or Dropbox on one
of the upgraded Overleaf plans.
 Overleaf offers real-time commenting and integrated chat, so edits can be discussed
without switching to other tools. Authors can leave comments, too. Upgraded plans allow
authors to keep track of every change made and who made it.
BENEFITS OF OVERLEAF
 No installation required
 Access your documents from any location
 If you invite somebody to work with you, both of you can instantly edit and see each
other’s changes, making collaboration easy.
 Ability to use official journal templates and direct submission links for a range of journals
 Access a version history for LaTeX projects to track changes.
 Reference manager sync (i.e. Zotero, Mendeley)
 GitHub and Dropbox integration (2-way sync)
Research Gate
 ResearchGate.net is an academic profile and social networking site, and a popular hub on
the web for sharing academic publications.
 ResearchGate is not a publisher.
 ResearchGate is not a journal.
 Viewing article related metrics (such as impact factor, citations, etc.) is an important
feature on this network.
 While reading articles does not require registration, people who wish to become site
members need to have an email address at a recognized institution or to be manually
confirmed as a published researcher in order to sign up for an account.
Uses of Research Gate
 Create professional profile: Each researcher is equipped with a personal profile designed
to resemble a research CV. The profile summarizes the interests of the researcher, her
education, projects, experiences and contact details, among others.
 Discussion groups: Users can join various groups to discuss with like-minded researchers
and work collaboratively in an interactive environment.
 Newsfeed: Newsfeed enables users to share updates, results and resources with their
network in real time, making it easier for scientists to stay connected and informed.
 Publications: It provides interactive access to a large amount of scientific knowledge.
 Self-archiving: The so-called “greenway” to open access is one way to make full-text
articles available to the public for free.
 Events: Events at ResearchGate provide extensive information on scientific conferences
and events taking place around the world, all in one place.
 Job opportunities: the platform offers an international job board where researchers can
find new job opportunities and doctoral programs that cover all scientific disciplines.
Benefits of ResearchGate
 Share posts
 Connect with colleagues
 Search for new collaborations
 Get statistics and metrics on the use of uploaded posts
 Ask researchers around the world who have the same set of interests questions.
 Job search or recruitment
