What is the water safety code?
The 5 key dangers children learn to look out for are…

1. Swim with the current and call for help.


2. Avoid water that could have a current faster and stronger than your
ability.
3. Do not overestimate your strength and ability in the water.
4. Always swim parallel to the shore, that way you’re never too far away
from it.
5. Do not be overconfident in water activities.
What are the four parts of water safety
code?
The 4 parts of the Water Safety Code are:

• Spot the dangers.


• Take safety advice.
• Don’t go alone.
• Learn how to help.
Where is the safest place to swim at the
beach?
• Beach safety

• Always swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches.
• Look for signs at the entrance to the beach for local information.
• Never swim alone, always swim with someone else.
• Never swim under the influence of alcohol or after a big meal.
How can you be safe in a swimming pool?

• Look for and read the signs. Read the signs posted in a swimming area and
follow the safety information.
• Walk, do not run.
• Be careful getting in and out of the pool.
• Look before you leap or dive in.
• Stay within your abilities.
• Never swim alone.
• Play carefully.
• Do not drink alcohol.
What are dangers of water?

Contaminated water can transmit diseases


such diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery,
typhoid, and polio. Contaminated drinking
water is estimated to cause 485 000
diarrhoeal deaths each year. By 2025, half
of the world’s population will be living in
water-stressed areas.
What is water Smart
Code?
The Water Smart Code is a list of simple
guidelines you should follow when engaging in
aquatic activities. They are: 1) Go Together: Play
or swim in the water with someone who knows
what to do in an emergency and can get help or
rescue you. Never swim alone. Use feet-first
entry when entering the water.
