TEAMS
A. Nature of Groups in Organization

• Group is a collection of two or more people who work together to accomplish a


task and achieve a common goals.

The following factors make a group:


• It consists of two or more people.
• There must be free interactions.
• There must have common identity
• They must have a common purpose.
• Members are mutually dependent on another.
Why Groups Develop?
• Classic Theory (George Homans)
- suggest that groups develop based on activities, interactions and sentiments
• Social Exchange Theory
- individuals form relationship based on the implicit expectation of mutually
beneficial exchanges based on trust and felt obligation.
• Social Identity Theory
- suggest that individuals get a sense of identity and self-esteem based upon their
membership in salient groups.

FORMAL GROUPS INFORMAL GROUPS


FORMAL GROUP
- a collection of people created to achieve
organizational goals.
Classification of Formal Group:
• Command Group – are specified by the
organizational chart and often consist of a manager
and the subordinates that report to the manager.
• Task Group – consist of people who work
together to achieve a common task within a
specified time period.
• Functional Group – is created by the organization
to accomplish specific goals within unspecified
time frame.
INFORMAL GROUP
- a collection of people that is formed to satisfy or to meet their
own needs.

Classification of Informal Group:


• Interest Group – is a group of people who
band together with a common interest and
attain a specific objective with which each
member is concerned.
• Friendship Group – these are groups of
people who have come together because they
share common ideals, similar social activities,
religious values or other common bonds.
