Symmetry

Reflective Symmetry

Reflection symmetry is where one half of the image is the reflection of the other half. You
could fold the image and have both halves match exactly.

Reflection symmetry can be in different orientations.

Symmetry
Lots of real life objects are symmetrical. Can you find any examples of symmetrical things in your house?
Butterfly Patterns
Divide your paper in half with a line and pretend the two halves are butterfly wings. Make
a symmetrical pattern with your grown up.

One person draws a 2D shape on one wing and the other person draws the same shape in
the correct position on the other wing. Take turns to draw on each wing. Click on the
butterfly to generate a 2D shape to use in your design.
Have a go…
Can you work with somebody in your house to mirror each others actions and make
yourselves symmetrical?
Now lets look at some line symmetry…
Can you print and cut out or draw these shapes to see how many lines of symmetry
they have?
How about these…

What would the other halves of these shapes look like if they were
reflected along the dotted mirror line?

Reflect this pattern along the dotted line:

A symmetrical pattern on a
grid always has a horizontal
and vertical line of symmetry.

Is this correct?
Vertical Mirror Lines
When mirror lines are not vertical on the page, turn them
around so that they are.
Vertical Mirror Lines
One way to draw the shape is to match the corners of the shape.
Diagonal Mirror Lines
When mirror lines are not vertical on the page, turn them
around so that they are.
