Types of Fluid Motion Explained

The document discusses four types of motion: 1) Linear translation, where fluid elements move bodily from one position to another parallel to the original position. 2) Linear deformation, where the axis of the deformed fluid element is parallel but different in length to the original. 3) Angular or shear deformation, defined as the average change in angle between adjacent sides. 4) Rotation, where both axes of the fluid element rotate in the same direction.

TYPES OF MOTION

 Linear Translation or Pure Translation

 Linear Deformation
 Angular Deformation
 Rotation
Linear Translation

It is defined as the movement

of the fluid elements in such a
way that it moves bodily from
one position to another and the
two axes ab and cd
represented in new positions
by a'b' and c'd' are parallel.
Linear Deformation

It is defined as the deformation

of the fluid element in the linear
direction when the element
moves. The axis of the element
in the deformed position and
un-deformed position are
parallel, but their lengths
change.
Angular or shear deformation

• It is defined as average change in

the angle contained by two
adjacent sides.
• The anglular deformation or shear
strain rate is given as
Rotation
• It is defined as the movement of
a fluid element in such a way
that both of its axes ( horizontal
as well as vertical) rotate in the
same direction. For two
dimensional element in x-y
plane, it is equal to
• The rotational components are
The Momentum Equation
• It is based on the law of conservation of momentum or on the
momentum principle, which states that the net force acting on
a fluid mass is equal to the change in momentum of flow per
unit time in that direction. The force acting on a fluid mass 'm' is
given by the Newton's second law of motion, F= m x a
But,

So,

The momentum principle is given as

Continuity equation in 2 Dimension

• The equation based on the

conservation of mass is called
continuity equation. Thus for a fluid
flowing through the pipe at all the
cross-section, the quantity of fluid per
second is constant.
• Rate of flow at section 1-1= Rate of
flow at section 2-2
• Therefore,
