Introduction
• GIGA  2020 (formerly “Project Connect”) is a joint initiative of UNICEF and ITU
had compiled detailed data on a number of countries showed in the world there are
about 5 to 7 million schools globally.
• Less than 10% of these schools either have computers or learners having access to.
• Developed nations that are doing well, Japan, China, Korea, India have greater
investment in digital learning in primary education. Their argument is attached to
digital literacy inclination that is so prevalent in childhood.
• In these countries they have specialized centers where computer skills are nursed and
enhanced in the early grades.
• According infolearners 2022, the world best school is Fayetevvile where children
from nursery school through the tenth grade enjoy a varied STEAM (Science,
Technology, Enginering, Arts and Maths) and each have computer access. Followed
by Lexington which has a ratio of seven teachers to one pupil.

THE ZAMBIAN PERSPECTIVE --- Primary

• According to 2018 education statistical bulletin Zambia had 9040 schools across
the 10 provinces.
• There are more primary and community schools as compare to secondary schools
• Teaching computer related topics at primary level is characterized with a number
of challenges
Less confidence and skill level by most teachers
No specialized rooms
Lack of motivation and support from local administration
Over enrolment in some schools
Low staffing levels
Resilience in accepting the subject.
THE ZAMBIAN PERSPECTIVE --- Primary
The literacy and numeracy levels are relatively lower compared to digital
literacy.
- Learners with digital literacy mostly breakthrough early and easily in
literacy and numeracy
- Less or no digital literacy offered in primary schools
- Every child in and out of school is 100% digitally literate.
The emphasis and specialization of computer studies is mainly at junior level.
At primary level computer related topics are progressively taught according
to age and ability
Less scaffolding is given to learners with excellent computer skills and
competencies
THE ZAMBIAN PERSPECTIVE --- Primary
Mostly computer related topics are skipped by teachers citing
lack of knowledge and tools thus creating knowledge gap
laying a poor foundation.
Most primary schools are located in rural and remote areas
with few specialized teachers and rooms.
Zambia is aligning itself with outcome based curriculum.
THE ZAMBIAN PERSPECTIVE --- Secondary
• The ratio is 1 computer to 27 learners (computer for Zambian
schools)
• Computer is taught both as a subject (8-9) and a science (10-12)
• Specialized teachers at senior levels and few in primary schools with
junior classes.
• Computer studies not consistently taught at junior level
• Resilience of adopting this subject at senior level
• Lack of specialized rooms in some schools
• Online lessons
THE ZAMBIAN PERSPECTIVE --- Administration
Most senior administrators shun embracing digital literacy
Computer not extensively used in management
Data storage and analysis
Monitoring systems (teaching and learning, attendance, tracking, learner
attendance, marking,)
Communications and networking (video conferencing)
Teacher management (assements, virtual monitoring, records)
Information resource (research, updates, correspondences,)
Personal life and digital world around.
Dynamics of computer studies/ science
There are basically two branches
Computer science refers to designing and building computers
and computer programs.
Information technology, on the other hand, refers to
maintaining and troubleshooting those computers and their
networks, systems, and databases to ensure they run smoothly.
Components of information technology.
Information Technology & Operational
Technology
• Information technology, (IT) refers to maintaining and troubleshooting
those computers and their networks, systems, and databases to ensure
they run smoothly.
• Operational technology (OT) is a category of hardware and software
that monitors and controls how physical devices perform
• IoT, or Internet of Things, refers to the collective network of
connected devices and the technology that facilitates communication
between devices and the cloud, as well as between the devices
themselves
The smart home The cloud.
Smart watch
Computer science
• Computer science refers to designing and building
computers and computer programs.
• Computer science, the study of computers and
computing, including their theoretical and algorithmic
foundations, hardware and software, and their uses for
processing information.
Branches of computer science
• Artificial intelligence
• Programming languages and logic
• Data structures and algorithms
• Computer architecture and organization
• Computer networks
• Computer security in cryptography
• Databases and data mining

Applications of Computers in education
1. Instant Access to Information
• Internet is a huge information database that can be used to extract any
information on a variety of topics.
• The Internet is presently a digital library where Students can refer to website
articles, teaching videos, and blogs for more data on subjects that interest
them.
• Students can use computers to get to online copies of their course textbooks,
which include various features like video tutorials and digital notebooks
i.e PDFs, DOCs, etc, which are not accessible with traditional course books.
• Teachers can also refer to it to research more resources on subjects and
syllabuses to be taught. It also helps educators to set tests, projects, homework,
and assignments.
Applications of Computers in education
2. Research for Homework.
Learners can communicate with their classmates and teachers online via
messaging or email in order to share their research materials and projects.
The virtual library  Google books, Scribd, Amazon Kindle, The Internet
Archive, Project Gutenberg s provides nearly all the information that students
require.
3. Organized Records and Data
teachers can also store and arrange data quickly in the storage devices about
the exams, lecture/ address notes, question papers, semester patterns, syllabuses,
grades of their students, and other essential documents in schools’ computers.

Applications of Computers in education
4. Virtual Coaching
students decide to pick specific courses, they need to see real-time resources
and updates, and innovation can help them discover them. This way, they can
find the correct timings for the course; the assignment outlines and also helps
them schedule their studies accordingly.
Zoom meetings, Moodle, Google Classroom, WizQ, Tutorcruncher, Yocoach
and Note master
5. Suitable for online and remote teaching using smart lesson plans.
8. Interactive Tools
9.  Increased Performance and attendance.
10.  Learning with Entertainment
Applications of Computers in education
Learning Programs
Major challenges
• Efficiency of both computer science, information
technology and IoT depends of electricity.
• Technological Dependence
• Varied Computer Literacy
• Technologically Enhanced Academic Dishonesty
• Potential Dangers (cyber bullying)
• Abuse of technology.
• Expensive to set up and maintain
Role of COSTAZ
• Enhance digital literacy provisions
• Equip teachers and learners with tools for teaching and
learning computers.
• Provision of in service training for skills and
competencies to enable teachers effectively facilitate
learning and discovery.
• Create platforms that uniquely connect professionals
• Create a resource pool center for information.
Key takeaways
• Any teacher can teach CTS, Computer studies in primary, all
we need is motivation and basics
• Computer science and ICT is wide. Specialization and
efficiency is key
• Digital literacy – Topics–-(primary) Basic applications (junior
sec)--- introduction to computer science (senior)
• All other subjects and sciences depend on computer today.
• Global digitization is swift, adaptation is key.
• Proper steady guidance is key to access and use of technology
THE END
I thank you most sincerely for being
ready to extend these ideas to our
provinces for the growth of COSTAZ
and effective teaching and learning
of CTS, Computer Studies and
Computers Science.
