Short Vowels

 Vowel Sounds

Every vowel can have a short sound and a long sound.

A vowel sound is long when it sounds like the letter itself.

For example, ‘a’ in age and ‘o’ in boat

A vowel sound is short when it does not sound like the letter itself. That
means its sound is restricted and we do not hear the full sound of the vowel.
• For example, ‘a’ in hat, and ‘o’ in hot

• A curved line above the vowel represents a short vowel sound.
