Factoring Polynomials by GCF
● When factoring using this method, first find the gcf of the
numerical coefficients.
● Find the variable with the least exponent in the common
variables.
● Multiply the two. This is now the GCF of the polynomial.
● To completely factor it, divide the the polynomial by its
GCF.
Examples
1 21x^4 - 14x 2 36 - 72x^2 3 70x^2 - 45x
21x^4 = 7 * 3 * x * x * x * x 36 = 9 * 4 70x^2 = 14 * 5 * x * x
14x = 7 * 2 * x 72x^2 = 9 * 8 * x * x 45x = 9 * 5 * x

GCF = 7x GCF = 9 GCF = 5x

21x^4/7x - 14x/7x = 3x^3 - 2 36/9 - 72x^2/9 = 4 - 8x^2 70x^2/5x - 45x/5x = 14x - 9

7x (3x^2 - 2) 9 (4 - 8x^2) 5x (14x - 9)

Example 1: Riezl
Example 2: Justine
Example 3: Fiona
Examples
4 32y^2 - 48g 5 12x^2y + 24xy
32y^2 = 8 * 4 * y * y
48g = 8 * 6 * g 12x^2y = *6*2*x*x*y
24xy = *4*6*x*y
GCF = 78
GCF = 6xy
32y^2/8 - 48g/8 = 4y - 6g
8 (4y - 6g) 12x^2y/6xy - 24xy/ 6xy = 2x + 4
6xy(2x + 4)

Factoring Difference of Two Squares
● Find the square root of the first term
● Find the square root of the second term
Examples
1 16x^2 - 49y^2 2 9c^2 - 81d^2 3 4x^2 - 36y^2
Square root of 16x^2 = 4x Square root of 9c^2 = 3c Square root of 4x^2 = 2x
Square root of 49y^2 = 7y Square root of 81d^2 = 9d Square root of 81d^2 = 9d

(4x - 7y)(4x + 7y) (3c - 9d)(3c + 9d) (2x - 6y)(2x + 6y)

Example 1: Riezl
Example 2: Justine
Example 3: Fiona
Examples
4 g^2 - 49a 5 16x^2 - 49y^2
Square root of 16x^2 = 4x
Square root of g^2 = g
Square root of 49y^2 = 7y
Square root of 49a = 7a
(4x + 7y)(4x - 7y)
(g - 7a)(g + 7a)

Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials
➔ First determine if the polynomial is a perfect square trinomial by
determining if the first and last term are perfect squares.
➔ If the middle term is twice the product of the square roots of the first
and last term, it is a perfect square trinomial.

● Find the square roots of the first and last term

● If the middle term is negative, the factors are the square of the
difference of their square roots, meanwhile if it is positive hen the
factors are the square of the sum of their square roots.
Examples
1 a^2 + 16ab + 64b^2 2 4 + 20a + 25a^2 3 4x^2 - 12x + 9
(square root of a^2 + square root (square root of 4 + square root of (square root of 4x^2 + square root
of 64b^2)^2 25a^2)^2 of 9)^2

(a + 8b)^2 (2 + 5a)^2 (2x - 3)^2

Example 1: Riezl
Example 2: Justine
Example 3: Fiona
Examples
4 49b + 20 + 25y 5 9x^2 - 30x + 25
(square root of 49b + square root (square root of 9x^2 + square root of
of 25y)^2 25)^2

(7b + 5y)^2 (3x - 5)^2

Reflection

➔ In this project, we were tasked with creating examples about factoring polynomials
as well as providing solutions to our given examples as a group. During the task,
we were able to understand the lesson in more depth by discussing the topic with
each other and clearing up any misconceptions about factoring. We learned more
about each factoring method and improving from our weaknesses during the lesson
through giving insight when needed. Our group had a good experience due to
cooperation in both reviewing through what we’ve learned ang providing accurate
examples. Although all factoring methods are important, our group’s favorite
technique is factoring the difference of two squares because of its simple steps
compared to factoring polynomials by GCF and factoring perfect square trinomials.
