Consonant Sounds
● Consonant sounds are produced with a significant
constriction in the oral cavity during their production.

● there are 24 consonant sounds in English

● /p/ /b/ /t/ /d/ /k/ /g/ /f/ /v/ /θ/ /ð/ /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /ʒ /

SLIDESMANIA
International Phonetic
Alphabet
● is an alphabet developed in the 19th century to
accurately represent the sounds of all languages

● it aims to provide a unique symbol for each

distinctive sound in a language that serves to
distinguish one word from another

● speech sounds are labeled strictly on the basis of

their articulation, and not on their usage in any
SLIDESMANIA

particular language
SLIDESMANIA
Voicing
● Voicing is shown by the position of a symbol in the individual cell. Symbols
for voiceless sounds are on the left of a cell, and voiced sounds are to the
right.
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
● The place of articulation refers to the place in the vocal tract where there is
the greatest constriction to airflow

Midsagittal

SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
BILABIAL
● are sounds in which the airflow is
modified by forming a
constriction between the lower lip
and the upper lip
● /p/ /b/ /m/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
LABIO-DENTAL
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the lower lip
and the upper teeth
● /f/ /v/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
DENTAL
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the tip of
the tongue and the upper teeth
● /θ/ /ð/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
ALVEOLAR
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the blade or
tip of the tongue and the alveolar
ridge
● /t/ /d/ /n/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
POST-ALVEOLAR
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the blade or
tip of the tongue and the post
alveolar region
● /ʃ/ /ʒ /
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
PALATAL
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the front of
the tongue and the hard palate
● /j/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
VELAR
● are sounds in which there is a
constriction between the back of
the tongue and the velum
● /ŋ/
SLIDESMANIA
Place of Articulation
GLOTTAL
● the vocal cords close
momentarily and cut off all
airflow through the vocal tract
● /ʔ/
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
● The manner of articulation is concerned with the degree of stricture in the vocal
tract, which refers to how close the articulators get when a sound is formed.
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
STOPS/PLOSIVES
● are sounds produced with
complete closure of two
articulators
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
NASAL
● are sounds produced with velum
lowered, and with air escaping
through the nasal cavity alone
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
TAP/FLAP
● are sounds produced with the blade of the tongue coming into a
momentary constriction or complete closure with the alveolar ridge
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
TRILL
● are sounds produced by holding one articulator next to the alveolar ridge in
a constriction of complete closure
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
FRICATIVES
● are sounds produced by bringing
together two articulators to the
point where the airflow is not quite
fully blocked: enough of a gap
remains for air to escape , but the
articulators are so close together
that friction is created as the air
escapes
SLIDESMANIA
Manner of Articulation
APPROXIMANTS
● a least radical degree of
constriction occurs when the
articulators come fairly close
together, but not sufficiently close
together to create friction.

Elephants and storms.

Did you know that elephants can sense

storms?

Elephants may be able to detect a

thunderstorm from hundreds of miles away,
and will head towards it, looking for water.

Pandas don’t hibernate.
When winter approaches, they head lower down their mountain homes to
warmer temperatures, where they continue to chomp away on bamboo!

There are more kangaroos than humans in Australia.

It is estimated that more than 50 million kangaroos live there. They are
Australia’s national symbol and appear on postage stamps, coins, and
airplanes.

Koalas are even more lazy than cats.

Koalas don’t have much energy and, when not feasting on leaves, they
spend their time dozing in the branches. Believe it or not, they can sleep for
