Life sketch
 Arcot Ramachandran was graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Madras
University.
 MS degree and PhD in Engineering from Purdue University, USA.
 Faculty member and Assistant Professor of the Department of Power
Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
 Research Engineer at Babcock & Wilcox Research and Development Centre,
Scotland.
 Post-doctoral research fellow, to Purdue University and, later, at Columbia
University.
 Came back to India, in 1957,joined at IIT, Madras and became Head of the
Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1965.
 In 1967, he became the Director of IIT Madras.

 Government Secretary and the Director-General of the CSIR (Council of


Scientific and Industrial Research) In 1973.

 His innovative steps taken at CSIR are as follows:


• Environment Planning, Co-ordination and Research Programme.
• Science and Engineering Research Council
• Energy Sources Research and Development Programme.
• National Information System for Science and technology (NISSAT).
• Central Electronics Limited.

Contributions
 He has made many contributions, both social and educational, during his
academic and administrative careers.
 He proposed the introduction of World Habitat Day, observed on first Monday
of every October.to remind the world of sustainable progress with regard to
environment.
 Because of him 1987 was declared as the International Year of Shelter for the
Homeless,
 He established the School of Research in Heat and Mass Transfer.
 He implemented the first Science and Technology Plan.
 Established the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) in Hyderabad.
 He is regarded as the architect of the National Program for Research and
Development in Renewable Sources of Energy.

India lost a great scientist on 17 May 2018 at the
age of 95.

He will always be remembered for his social


commitment to the cause of sustainable
global development.
