on physical development of self.

STAGES OF LIFE SPAN
PHYSICAL SELF

• Physical self-concept is the individual's perception of

themselves in areas of physical ability and appearance.
Physical ability includes concepts such as physical
strength and endurance, while appearance refers to
attractiveness and body image.
• Includes the body parts like neck, arm, legs and the
internal organs.
PHYSICAL SELF

• The body performs ist functions least well during (1)

infancy and (2) old age.
• Physical efficiency generally peaks in the early
adulthood and declines into the middle age.
• Physical development and growth during childhood
continues at a slow rate of growth in babyhood.
ADOLESCENCES
• Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood,
from ages 10 to 19. Adolescents experience rapid physical,
cognitive and psychosocial growth. This affects how they feel,
think, make decisions, and interact with the world around them.
• Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological
development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to
legal adulthood.
• Adolescence is usually associated with the teenage years, but its
physical, psychological or cultural expressions may begin earlier
and end later.
LIFE SPAN

• Lifespan is defined as the maximum number of years

that a human can live, while life expectancy is the
average total number of years that a human achieves
• Development from conception of death.
STAGES OF LIFE SPAN
THE STAGES LIFESPAN

Prenatal Development. Fertilzation to birth

Infancy Birth to 2 weeks

Babyhood 2 weeks to 2nd year

Early Childhood 2-6 years old

Late Childhood 6 to 10-12 years

Puberty 10-12 to 14 years

Late Adulthood. 60 to death

FACTORS AFFECTING GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
HUMAN NATURE: NATURE VS. NURTURE

What is Nature vs. Nurture.

In the context of the nature vs. nurture debate, “nature” refers to
biological/genetic predispositions' impact on human traits, and
nurture describes the influence of learning and other influences
from one's environment.
NATURE VS. NURTURE DEBATE

• Nature • Nurture
Nature is what we think of as Nurture is generally taken as
pre-wiring and is influenced by the influence of external factors
genetic inheritance and other after conception, e.g., the
biological factors. product of exposure, life
experiences and learning on an
individual.
FACTORS AFFECTING PHYSICAL GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
1. HEREDITY
Heredity, the sum of all biological processes by which particular
characteristics are transmitted from parents to their offspring.
The set of genes that an offspring inherits from both parents, a
combination of the genetic material of each, is called the
organism's genotype.
CHROMOSOMES- A chromosome is a long DNA molecule
with part or all of the genetic material of an organism.
(Autosomes and Genosomes)
GENES-A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of
heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. Some genes act as
instructions to make molecules called proteins. Can be:
-Dominant (strong genes)
-Recessive (weak genes)
FACTORS AFFECTING PHYSICAL GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
1. ENVIRONMENT
Refers to the factors to which the individual is exposed
after conception to death which includes learning and
experience.
Factors such as diet, nutrition, and diseases play an
important role in physical development.
BODY IMAGE
BODY IMAGE

• Body image is a person's thoughts, feelings and perception of

the aesthetics or sexual attractiveness of their own body.
• It is how we think and feel about ourselves physically, and how
we believe others see us. When we talk about body image,
there are lots of ways we can think about our body and the way
we look.
• Body image is important because the way we see ourselves
influences every aspect of our lives: our mental health, our
physical health, how we take care of ourselves, how we interact
with and relate to other people.
APPEARANCE

• Appearance are defining traits or features of a person's

body. These are aspects of appearance that are visually
apparent to others, even with no other information about the
person. They can include a variety of things. Hair and facial
features play a big role but aren't the whole picture.
• Physical appearance is the outward phenotype or look of
human beings. There are infinite variations in human
phenotypes, though society reduces the variability to
distinct categories.
But whatever your appearance,
always be proud of yourself
because your beautiful just the
way you are. *wink*
SELF-STEEM

• Self-esteem is your overall opinion of yourself — how you

feel about your abilities and limitations. When you have
healthy self-esteem, you feel good about yourself and see
yourself as deserving the respect of others. When you have
low self-esteem, you put little value on your opinions and
ideas.
• It is an individual's subjective evaluation of their own
worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself as
well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride,
and shame.
• Body image can affect both the adolescent's
physical and psychological well-being.
• Younger woman and girls tends to have poor body
image
CAUSE FOR POOR BODY IMAGE

• Media

negative body image, a number of mental health issues can arise.

sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder
or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave
and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.

they are and what they can do. They often feel incompetent,
unloved, or inadequate. People who struggle with low self-esteem
are consistently afraid about making mistakes or letting other
people down.

Body Modification. Body modification is the deliberate altering
of the human anatomy or human physical appearance. It is often
done for aesthetics or sexual enhancement.
