providing us with a framework

to enter more deeply into the
Paschal Mystery of Our Lord.
ADVENT
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)

…from the Latin word “Adventus”

meaning “coming”, anticipating the
Coming of the Lord.

The four Sundays before Christmas are

called Advent Sundays and are a time
to prepare for Christ coming into our
lives and into our world.
ADVENT
GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, Pope Paul VI

39. Advent has a twofold character: as

a time to prepare for the solemnity
of Christmas when the Son of Godʼs
first coming to us is remembered; as
a season when that remembrance
directs the mind and heart to await
Christ's Second Coming at the end
of time.

The season of Advent is thus a

period for devout and joyful
expectation.
SHAPE: circular shape
It means:
✓ without beginning or end
✓ symbolizes God’s complete
and unending love for us
**a love that sent his Son into
the world to redeem us from
the curse of sin.
✓ It also represents eternal life
which becomes ours through
faith in Jesus Christ.
 Gretchen Filz, 2016
NUMBER:
The Advent Wreath traditionally holds four candles which are
lit, one at a time, on each of the four Sundays of the Advent
season.  Each candle represents 1,000 years.  Added together, the
four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for
the world’s Savior—from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth
was foretold in the Old Testament.  Gretchen Filz, 2016
COLOR:
Violet is a liturgical color that is used to signify a time of prayer,
penance, and sacrifice and is used during Advent and Lent. During
on the third Sunday of Advent or the “Gaudete” means joy, the
color to be used is Pink.  Gretchen Filz, 2016

Christmas
Season
At Christmas:
✓ we remember and celebrate the
birth of Jesus.
✓ Reminds us of the radical
transformation effected in our
human life.
✓ He comes into this world to take
upon Himself our human nature,
God’s own Son did not merely
become one of us; He gave us the
power of becoming real children
of God.
✓ A new race, a holy people, whom
He, with his Divine Life, leads to
the heavenly throne.  Harper, 2015
Next to the yearly celebration of the
paschal mystery, the Church holds
most sacred the memorial of
Christ’s birth and early
manifestations. This is the purpose
of the Christmas season.
The Nativity of the Lord
– Vigil Mass
– Midnight Mass
– Dawn Mass
– Mass during the day

Ordinary
Time
Ordinary Time derives its name from the word ordinal,
meaning number.
This season, therefore, is a season of weeks counted by
numbers, from the First Week in Ordinary Time
through the Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time.
Lenten
LENT
GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, Pope Paul VI

✓ From the Latin word “Quadragesima”

meaning Fortieth.
✓ Lent is a 40 day or six-week
preparation for the celebration of
Easter.
✓ For the Lenten liturgy disposes both
catechumens and the faithful to
celebrate the paschal mystery:
catechumens, through the several
stages of Christian initiation; the
faithful, through reminders of their
own baptism and through penitential
practices.
✓ Lent, in commemoration of Christ’s fasting and
prayer, is for all His faithful a time of fasting and
prayer.
✓ Lent starts on Ash Wednesday ‘till the Lord’s
Supper.
✓ The “Alleluia” is not used until Easter Vigil.
✓ It is a season of prayer, fasting and abstinence,
and alms-giving.
✓ The Sundays of this season
are called the First, Second,
Third, Fourth or “Laudate
Sunday”, a day of rejoicing ,
and Fifth Sundays of Lent.
Holy Week
✓ The Sixth Sunday of Lent, marks the
beginning of Holy Week, is called
Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday).
✓ It is a commemoration of Christ’s
passion, beginning with his Messianic
entrance into Jerusalem.
Palm Sunday
On this day we hear two Gospels:
1. Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem,
2. second the Passion and Death of Jesus.
The procession with palms at the
beginning of Mass recalls entry into
Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.
Chrism Mass
During the Holy Week, on the
Thursday before the Lord’s
Supper in the evening, a Chrism
Mass will be celebrated in the
morning by the bishop,
concelebrating mass with his
presbyterate, blesses the oils and
consecrates the chrism.
Sacred Paschal
Triduum /
Easter Triduum*
*GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, APOSTOLIC LETTER , MOTU PROPRIO, Pope Paul VI
Sacred Paschal Triduum / Easter
Triduum
✓The holiest "Three Days" of the Church's year, where the
Christian people recall the suffering, death, and
resurrection of Jesus (USCCB)

✓ The Triduum (a Latin word for a three-day period)

begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on the
evening of the Thursday of Holy Week and includes
Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
aundy Thursday / Holy Thursday
✓We commemorate the last Jewish
Passover Feast of Jesus known as the
Last Supper.
- Matthew 26: 17-30,
- Mark 14: 12-20,
- Luke 22: 17-38,
- John: 13: 1-17

✓ “Maundy” is derived from the Latin

“mandatum”
- a commandment of God.
aundy Thursday / Holy Thursday
In addition to the commandment “Do this in remembrance of me”
there are two others within this time period:

John 13:3-7
Jesus washes the feet of the
disciples and commands them to do
the same.

John 13:34-35
A new commandment of Love is given.
aundy Thursday / Holy Thursday
Cassilly.S.J.; 1942; Loyola University Press, Chicago

During this celebration, the bells are

rung for last time at the Gloria , and
after the Mass a procession is formed
to the Repository where the
consecrated host remains ‘till the next
morning for the public adoration of
the faithful.
Good Friday
Cassilly.S.J.; 1942; Loyola University Press, Chicago

No mass is said, for the church is mourning

for her dead and crucified Savior.

✓ The Passion are chanted,

✓ Veneration of the Cross,
✓ Consecrated host day before is consumed,
✓ the Altar is stripped,
✓ the tabernacle is opened to show that the
Lord is not present,
✓ and the church becomes silent.
aster Vigil / Holy Saturday
rcdow.org.uk/att/files/faith/catechesis/.../cycleofthechurchsyear.pdf

The name is derived from Pasch (Passover), hence

Pacques in French and Pasquale in Italian.

**Our English word ‘Easter’ probably comes from the

name of a pagan goddess of Spring).
Since the earliest Christian times Sunday has been
kept as the Day of the Lord – renewing in the
Eucharist the mystery of Christ’s passover, from
death to life. But the Jewish Passover
was never completely abandoned; it was to be an
inspiration for the Christian passover.
aster Vigil / Holy Saturday
GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, Pope Paul VI

✓ During the holy night when the Lord rose from the
dead, ranks as the “mother of all holy vigils.”

✓ Keeping watch, the Church awaits Christ's

resurrection and celebrates it in the sacraments.

✓ Accordingly, the entire celebration of this vigil

should take place at night, that is, it should either
begin after nightfall or end before the dawn of
Sunday.

Easter
EASTER
GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, Pope Paul VI

✓ The fifty days from Easter Sunday to

Pentecost are celebrated in joyful
exultation as one feast day, or better
as one “great Sunday.”
✓ These above all others are the days
for the singing of the Alleluia
✓ The Sundays of this season rank as
the Sundays of Easter and, after
Easter Sunday itself, are called the
Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth,
and Seventh Sundays of Easter. The
period of fifty sacred days ends on
Pentecost Sunday.
Ascension of the Lord
GENERAL NORMS FOR THE LITURGICAL YEAR AND THE CALENDAR, Pope Paul VI

✓ On the fortieth day after Easter the

Ascension of the Lord is
celebrated, except in places where,
not being a holy day of obligation,
it has been transferred to the
Seventh Sunday of Easter
✓ The weekdays after the Ascension
of the Lord until the Saturday
before Pentecost inclusive are a
preparation for the coming of the
Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Pentecost
Cassilly.S.J.; 1942; Loyola University Press, Chicago

In Greek means “the fiftieth day”, and the

feast is thus called because on the fiftieth
day after Easter the Holy Spirit descended
on the Apostles in the form of fiery tongues
and inspired them to go out and preach
Christ crucified.

On the octave of Pentecost is celebrated the

Feast of the Most Holy Trinity.
Ordinary
Time
✓ From the Monday following Pentecost Sunday until the
Saturday before the 1st Sunday of Advent.

✓ The last Sunday is the Solemnity of Christ the King,

which is Sunday 34 in Ordinary Time.
The mystery of Christ, unfolded through the cycle of the year, calls us to live his mystery in
our own lives. This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the saints, celebrated by
the Church throughout the year. There is no tension between the mystery of Christ and the
celebration of the saints, but rather a marvelous harmony.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son,
and the feasts of all the saints proclaim the wonderful works of Christ in his servants and
offer the faithful fitting examples for their imitation. In the feasts of Mary and of the saints,
the Paschal Mystery of Christ is proclaimed and renewed.

Seasons, saints, and celebrations during the liturgical year are laid out in a yearly liturgical
calendar.
