Learning Goals and Scales

The following learning goals and scales are designed with the idea that students learn skills and understand
concepts in a progressive way. The scale is broken down into five categories, 0-4, for each common core standard.
Each category has its own learning goal. Proficiency in each math standard will be represented by a score of 3,
and highlighted by stars*. A score of 4 indicates an advanced knowledge of the skill. The learning goals for scales
2 and then 1, will either be derived from sub-skills of the standard, or from the background knowledge of earlier
grade levels. A score of zero on the learning scale is useful to record if students have been given an opportunity
to work on the assessment, but did not or could not perform for some reason. Using learning goals and scales can
encourage students to take ownership of their learning by recognizing what they already know, and creating a
clear goal of what they are expected to learn by the end of the year.
These learning goals and scales are supported by the research and suggestions of Robert J. Marzano, in The
Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction . The scales for each
standard follow this basic structure.

Scale/Date Learning Goals

4 The student can demonstrate mastery, apply the standard in an advanced way, and explain it to others.
I understand this concept so well that I can apply it to other problems, and explain it to you in my own words!
3 The student can demonstrate mastery of this standard.
* I understand what is going on here and I can show it! *
2 The student has some background knowledge in the fundamental concepts of this standard.
I am not sure if I understand this completely, but I have enough confidence to try and figure it out.
1 The student has little background knowledge in the fundamental concepts of this standard.
This looks like something I’ve learned before, but I’m not sure how I can use my knowledge to do this.
0 Even with help, the student did not complete any part of this task.
This is new to me and I cannot do these problems right now.
