OPENING PRAYER
Psalm 9: 9-16
Left:
It is he who judges the world
with justice,
who judges the peoples with fairness.
The Lord is a stronghold
for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Right:
Those who know your name
trust in you;
you never forsake those
who seek you, Lord.
Sing hymns to the Lord
enthroned on Zion;
proclaim his deeds
among the nations!
Left:
For the avenger of bloodshed
remembers,
does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
Be gracious to me, Lord;
see how my foes afflict me!
You alone can raise me
from the gates of death.
Right:
Then I will declare all your praises,
sing joyously of your salvation
in the gates of daughter Zion
The nations fall into the pit they dig;
in the snare they hide,
their own foot is caught.

⊳ HOW DOES THE SOCIAL TEACHING OF

15 They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to
drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the
money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 16 He did
not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area. 17 Then he
taught them saying, “Is it not written:

‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples’?

But you have made it a den of thieves.”

18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a
way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was
astonished at his teaching. 19 When evening came, they went out of the city.

Mark 11:15-19

Jesus…
⊳ Totally involved in the life of others
⊳ Sick, Suffering, Injustices, and death
⊳ But remember, He did not come for spiritual
reason or salvation of souls only.
⊳ He came to liberate people from all forms of evil
and oppression. 22
WE BELIEVE THAT:

TRANSFORMING SOCIAL
REALITIES WITH THE
POWER OF THE GOSPEL
HAS ALWAYS BEEN A
CHALLENGE.

23
LUMEN FIDEI

Pope Francis
“Faith thus appeared to some as an illusory light,
preventing mankind from boldly setting out
in quest of knowledge.”
24
Men and women of todayhave greater
need of the Gospel: of faith that saves,
of hope that enlightens, and of the
charity that loves.
25

⊳ This is the reason why the
MAGISTERIUM (teaching authority
of the Church) puts into writing the
Catholic Social Teaching/Social
Teaching of the Church.

19th Century – events of an economic nature
produced a dramatical social, political, and
cultural impact.

Industrial Revolution
Profoundly changed centuries-old societal
structures, raising serious problems of
justice and posing the first great social
issue – LABOR. (conflict between capital
and labor) 34
In this context…

⊳ The Church felt the need to become

involved and intervene in a new way: the
res novae (“new things”) – the events in
the Industrial Revolution challenged the
teachings of the Church.
⊳ The Church felt the need to respond by
finding appropriate solutions to unfamiliar

the Church to be more vocal on social
structures and conditions of people in the
