FILIPINO THINKING: FROM LOCAL
TO GLOBAL
(Reyes 1990) Like any other people, the Filipino must
eventually take consciousness of his own particular life and his
world, his society and his gods in the light of Truth, and thereby
realize his proper being.
(Mercado 1992) However, the pioneering attempts to formulate
a Filipino philosophy share the fate of the most pioneering
works: the lack of refined tools and the lack of predecessors
upon who, to stand.
THE FOUR (4) DIMENSIONS OF
THE FILIPINO THOUGHTS
 Filipinos do have their own philosophy.

1.Loob: Holistic and Interior Dimensions • constitutes

Kabutihang-loob
Kalooban
self to others
LOOB: HOLISTIC
AND INTERIOR
DIMENSIONS
 Loob puts one in touch with his fellow beings
 Interiority manifests itself in freedom (Mercado 1992)
• Great Philippine Values
o Use of intermediaries or go-betweens
o Values of loyalty, hospitality, pakikisama
o Respect to authorities
 Loob focuses on human heartedness such as compassion,
kindness and harmonious relationship with people
LOOB: HOLISTIC
AND INTERIOR
DIMENSIONS
 Filipinos believe in the innate goodness of the human being.
 Filipino ethics has an internal code and sanction that flow
from within itself.
 Filipinos as individual looks at himself as holistic from the
interior dimension under the principle of harmony.
FILIPINO
PHILOSOPHY OF
TIME
OFTEN, FILIPINO TIME IS MISTAKENLY
INTERPRETED AS ALWAYS DELAYED IN THE
COMMITTED TIME OF ARRIVAL. THIS
NOTION CAN BE MISLEADING SINCE THE
FILIPINO FARMERS ARE EARLY RISERS TO
GO TO THEIR FIELD AND WASTE NO TIME
FOR WORK.
FILIPINO PHILOSOPHY OF TIME
 Filipinos proves that we believe in the Gulong ng Palad (wheel of fortune)
 looks at life as a series of ups and downs (Timbreza 1992)
 makes the Filipinos an unmitigated optimist
GULONG NG PALAD

 You may be down now but there will come a time when you will be up.
 It’s a way to summon up hope in the hearts of people who are undergoing trials at the moment; at
the same time, it also serves as a warning to those who are experiencing success or good fortune at
the moment. There will come a time when this prosperous time will be no more.
FILIPINO PHILOSOPHY
OF TIME

 Gulong ng Palad blends well with the foreign philosophical ideas in the Asian
region:
o Indian law of karma: good and bad karma
o Chinese yin and yang- opposite forces are interconnected
o Japanese and Chinese belief of “Pakikisama”- living in harmony with
nature

BAHALA
NA
BAHALA NA
 The Pre- Spanish Filipino people believed in a supreme being, Batula and Bathala, in this
regard, the originality of Filipino thought will probably be precisely in his personalistic
view of the universe(Timbreza 2002), because the Filipino seems to signify that in life, we
must not reckon only with nature and human but also to the origin to the problem of evil.
 The Filipinos subconsciously accepts the bahala na attitude as a part of life
 They use the word bahala na as a way to show their faith; in leaving everything to God
or to their Bathala
 Bahala na is one of the most outstanding Filipino virtues because it is one aspect perceived
as courage to take risks
 On the other hand, Bahala na is seen as fatalistic; sort of leaving everything to God or by
chance

NEGATIVE ASPECTS
