ORAL LITERATURE

• Oral Literature is a way of orally communicating with others while performing. Forms of
Oral Literature can include poetry, riddles, tongue twisters, songs and more.
SALAWIKAIN ( IDIOM )

• The term “idiom” refers to a phrase that has its own meaning that cannot be derived
from the meanings of its separate words.
• Examples:

• Better to arrive late than not to come at all
SALAWIKAIN ( IDIOM )

• Butas ang bulsa
• Meaning
• A person without any money. Literally “a pocket with a hole”
BUGTONG (RIDDLES)

• A riddle is a mystifying, misleading, or puzzling question posed as a problem to be solved


or guessed.
• Example: Dala-dala mo siya pero kinakain ka niya.
• Sagot: Kuto
CHANTS OR BULONG

• It was used in witchcraft or enchantment, particularly in remote areas where our forefathers
believed.
• For the unseen spirits and supernatural beings like dwarfs or Nuno in Tagalog, they will ask
permission to pass by the Nuno's territory as a sign of respect to them and to also not have
bad things happen to them.
• Example:

• Tabi Tabi po, nuno Makikiraan po.


SALAWIKAIN

• A proverb is made up of phrases that are usually in poetic form, in which case it conveys a golden lesson. Proverbs
come from the advice or statements of our ancestors based on their own life experiences. This is a short sentence that
is meaningful and useful if used as a guide in our daily life. Each proverb contains wisdom and lessons about good
manners, fellowship, concern for the people, and love and service to God. The proverb is important in the life of a
Filipino.

Example:
“Kung walang tiyaga, walang nilaga”
“Kaibigan kung meron, kung wala ay sitsaron”
“Puri sa harap, sa likod paglibak”
“Ang tao kapag mayaman, marami ang kaibigan”
“Ang kaginhawaan ay nasa kasiyahan at wala sa kasaganahan”
MITO

• Mito or Myth refers to legends and stories that aim to explain natural phenomenon,
normally including supernatural beings and events.
• Myths were important to the people of the time because they were ways to explain things,
creatures and other phenomenon in a way that made sense to them.
• Examples of myths include:
 Ang alamat ng Pinya
 Myth of Arachne
