Venn diagrams are very useful in showing the

relationship between sets. A Venn diagram


consists of a rectangle which represents the
universal set and a circle or circles inside the
rectangle which represent the set or sets being
considered in the
discussion. It is understood that the elements
in the set are inside the circle that represents
the set.
The following is the list of students in a group (U). They
were asked for their favorite subject: Math or Science.
Students who chose Math were in set M and those whose
favorite is Science were in set S.
In solving set operations using the Venn diagram, the
following are the steps
to be followed:

Step 1. Determine what is given and what are being


asked.
Step 2. Illustrate using the Venn diagram.
Step 3. Determine what operations to be used.
Step 4. Use the operations.
Step 5. Answer the questions being asked.
