Self Reflection
& Goal Setting
Y11
HOMEROOM
Rationale & Aim
You are about to begin the most important year of the MYP, so this is a very good
time to complete some self reflection and set yourself some new goals.
As with any busy and stressful time in your life, living a balanced/moderate
lifestyle is vital to ensure that you stay in the right frame of mind.
The aim of this lesson is to give you an opportunity not to just stop and think
about your academic goals, but also to consider other important aspects of your
life.
Starter Task:
Balanced/Moderate Lifestyle
(Class Discussion)
◦ Individually - consider what are the most important areas of your life? Write these down.
For the purpose of this task, please list education/schoolwork as one of your sectors.
◦ Class Discussion – what types of things have you included on your list? Why are these
important to you?
◦ Class Discussion - Would you be able to achieve happiness if any of these areas were
excluded from your life e.g. family?, schoolwork/education?, friends?, socialising?,
religion?, health?, sport?, music/arts?,)
Main Task – Part 2
◦ Look at the template of the wheel. This represents your life and
the factors you considered most important to you. Label each
sector on the outside of the wheel with an important area of your
life.
◦ Here is one example…
◦ You now need to take some time to individually reflect on each aspect of your life. Take each sector in turn
and take a few seconds to think about this area of your life. On a scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being the
lowest (worst) and 10 being the highest (best) “how happy are you with this area of your life?”
Main Task – Part 3
Think about answers to the following questions (You can record your answers on the wheel if you like, or just keywords)…
For this task, I want you to pick three sectors to review. One of them should be education/schoolwork. For the two others, look
at sectors that you have given yourself the lowest rating and answer the following questions for each. This may take some
time…
1. Have you ever been higher than the number you have recorded?
2. What was different when you were higher up the scale?
3. Have you ever been lower than the number you have recorded?
4. What did you do to move up the scale?
5. What have you learnt from previously being lower on the scale?
Volunteers can share this with the class if they want, but this is completely optional.
Now, let’s dig deeper…
Look at that same three sectors and answer the following questions
Adding Value
(Individual Task)
◦ This may take a lot of time; we will give you around 10 minutes today...(If this helps, a very
trustworthy friend can ask you the questions so you can answer out loud, which is
sometimes a better way to reflect, by thinking out loud).
Plenary Task
Goal Setting
(Individual Task)
After this reflection, think about what your goals may be moving forward into the next term…
We only get one chance at life and you have a responsibility to ensure you make the most of your life and be the best you
can be – academically and personally.
Take 3 to 4 minutes to record your goals at the bottom of your sheet, you should write two academic goals and two
personal goals. You way wish to take a picture of these on your phone to remind yourself of them from time to time and
assess if you are meeting them or not.
If you are willing, share these goals with the group or with your peer.
