Creativity is typically defined as
the ability to come up with new
and useful ideas.
So for example when a subject
was shown a sock, a common
and uncreative response was it
can warm your feet, while a
novel, highly ranked response
was to use the sock as a water
filtration system.
We've all heard the simplistic adage
that left-brain thinking is logical and
analytical while right-brain thinking
is creative and innovative. It's an easy
to understand binary that is also a
complete myth. The brain is,
unsurprisingly, much more
complicated than a simple left/right
binary, and new research is
illustrating that creative thought can
be determined by how effectively the
brain can communicate between
different regions that usually work
separately
Creativity isn’t some exotic power that is given to just a few people.
Claiming that “I'm just not the creative type” is a pretty weak excuse for
avoiding creative thinking. Certainly, some people are primed to be more
creative than others. However, nearly every person is born with some
level of creative skill and the majority of our creative thinking abilities
are trainable.
Most of us had imaginary friends when we were
children. As kids, we had to make up new games
just to keep things new and fresh. All this gave a
good boost to our creativity and imagination.
But do you think kids of today have imaginary
friends?
Do they invent games the way we used to?
Absolutely not! In fact, we hardly ever provide
them the chance. We just buy them video games and
make sure they are kept busy for a couple days.
In today’s world of video games, PC games and
game apps, a child would hardly feel the need for an
imaginary friend. Yet, it is not just these games that
we need to blame. It is the entire tech culture.
You will have to get out of your old habits and take
steps to enhance creativity.
How to Be Creative
Step 1: Give yourself permission to create junk
Sometimes you have to write 4 terrible pages just to discover that you wrote one good sentence in the
second paragraph of the third page.
Step 2: Create on a schedule
The person who sits around theorizing about what a best-selling book looks like will never write it.
Step 3: Finish something
There are no artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, or scientists who became great by half-finishing their
work. Stop debating what you should make and just make something.
Step 4: Stop judging your own work
Sure, you care about your work, but don't get so serious about it that you can't laugh off your
mistakes and continue to produce the thing you love. Don't let judgment prevent delivery.
