Freshwater

environments
Objectives
1.Fresh water environment are very important part of our earth
environment as they provide the water for various purposes and
use.
2.They also help the domesticated and terrestrial ecosystem to
survive and keep these kind of ecosystem alive in nature.
3.They just occupy 1%total water present on earth which supports
the more than 7 billion human population and thousand of species
on our earth.
4.So it is important to keep fresh water environment safe from
other system as it is a life for other environment.
IF YOU CAN’T
CLEAN YOUR
SURROUNDING,
THEN DON’T
MAKE IT DIRTY
Difficult words for definition
Biotic-Involving or relating to living things in the environment.

Anoxic- No oxygen
Voluminous-Full or Big
Hydrosphere - discontinuous layer of water at or near Earth's surface.

Pedosphere- The soil mantle of the Earth

Introduction
Natural resources management is often characterised by partial
views of the life support system that sustains society and there has
been a general lack of integrative theories that span over disciplines
and deal with social-ecological sustainability. The purpose of this
report is to broaden our understanding
of human dependence on the interactions of terrestrial ecosystems
and freshwater flows, in a time of rapid global social-ecological
change. The report emphasises the need for a more integrated, less
sectorial view of the ecohydrological landscape in which human
activities take place and it mainly focuses on a global and
continental scale.
Freshwater environment
They include lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, springs,
and wetlands. In contrast, marine habitats, which
contain more salt, might be thought of as
freshwater environment. Different characteristics,
like as temperature, light permeability, nutrients,
and vegetation, can be used to categorize
freshwater environment.
Pond is an area filled with
water, either natural or artificial,
that is smaller than a
lake.Defining them to be less
than 5 hectares (12 acres) in
area, less than 5 meters (16 ft)
deep, and with less than 30%
emergent vegetation helps in
distinguishing their ecology from
that of lakes and wetlands.
Ponds can be created by a wide
variety of natural processes.
Lake is a body of water that
is located on land, is
contained in a basin, and is
bordered by land. Lakes are
not oceans because they are
on land, but they do
participate in the Earth's
water cycle, much like the
much bigger oceans do, lakes
are often deeper and larger
than ponds, which are also on
land.
River are flowing waters that drain
the landscape, and include the
biotic (living) interactions amongst
plants, animals and micro-
organisms, as well as abiotic
(nonliving) physical and chemical
interactions of its many parts. River
are part of larger watershed
networks or catchments, where
smaller headwater streams drain
into mid-size streams, which
progressively drain into larger river
networks.
Stream is a continuous body
of surface water,flowing within
the bed and banks of a channel.
Depending on its location or
certain characteristics, a stream
may be referred to by a variety
of local or regional names. Long
large streams are usually called
rivers, while smaller, less
voluminous and more
intermittent streams are known
as streamlets, brooks or creeks.
Spring is a point of exit at which
groundwater from an aquifer
flows out on top of Earth's crust
(pedosphere) and becomes
surface water. It is a component
of the hydrosphere. Springs have
long been important for humans
as a source of fresh water,
especially in arid regions which
have relatively little annual
rainfall.
Wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is
flooded by water, either permanently
(for years or decades) or seasonally (for
weeks or months). Flooding results in
oxygen-free (anoxic) processes
prevailing, especially in the soils.The
primary factor that distinguishes
wetlands from terrestrial land forms or
water bodies is the characteristic
vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to
the unique anoxic hydric soils. Wetlands
are considered among the most
biologically diverse of all ecosystems,
serving as home to a wide range of plant
and animal species.
How is water distributed on earth?

The distribution of water on the Earth's

surface is extremely uneven. Only 3% of water
on the surface is fresh; the remaining 97%
resides in the ocean. Of freshwater, 69%
resides in glaciers, 30% underground, and less
than 1% is located in lakes, rivers and swamps.
What are the sources of freshwater?

Rainfall, surface water

resources, rivers, lakes, and
reservoirs, and groundwater
resources.
What are the uses of freshwater?

Uses of water include

agricultural, industrial,
household, recreational
and environmental
activities
How is water treated as a domestic
resource?

Safe and readily available water is important for public

health, whether it is used for drinking, domestic use,
food production or recreational purposes. Improved
water supply and sanitation, and better management
of water resources, can boost countries' economic
growth and can contribute greatly to poverty
reduction.
Summary
Freshwater environment services are the benefits that
humans gain from rivers and lakes in our surrounding
environment. These services include for example drinking
water, food, biological diversity, climate regulation, water for
irrigation, and recreation, and are all very important to human
life and well-being. The services that freshwater provide are
currently threatened by both human activities and climate
change.
