What is Non-verbal
Communication?

words

Paralanguage

• ‘how’ something is said.

• Something said is maybe


contradictory to what is done.

• Example:
Saying ‘I love you’ with an angry tone.
Different emotions of saying
“I love you” (Click)
Language of Flowers

• Giving flowers mean something.

• Example:
Italians send chrysanthemum for
special occasions, but Filipinos
generally see them in funeral
arrangements.
Language of colors

• Colors have certain meanings based


on the dictates of culture and gender.

• Example:
In Thailand, only the King can wear
yellow. Tourists who dare to wear the
royal color are punished.
Chronemics

• Language of Time

• How time is viewed differently by


various country.

• Example:
‘Filipino Time’
Proxemics

• Language of Space

• About showing who they are.

• Example:
Middle class family have bigger
houses.
Haptics

• Language of Touch

• One of the most powerful non-


verbal communication.

• Touch can comfort, it can aggravate,


it can encourage, or it can dissuade.
Gestures

• Most often used type of


nonverbal communication.

• Gestures are used for:


Emphasizing, regulating,
illustrating, Emblems
Facial Expression

• Example:
Eye contact
Posture and Personal
Appearance

• How one stands or sits in Communicative


Situations tells people around how one
sees oneself as a speaker one’s attitude
toward the Message, and how one looks at
the Listener.

• Being dressed well also adds on to one’s


self-confidence.
In verbal communications,

factor affecting
miscommunication
