EFFECTS OF USING INHALANTS

WHAT ARE INHALANTS?
→ Inhalants are volatile substances that
produce chemical vapors that can be
inhaled to induce a psychoactive, or
mind-altering, effect.
01 → Although other abused substances can
be inhaled, the term "inhalants" is
used to describe a variety of substances
02 whose main common characteristic is
that they are rarely, if ever, taken by
→ Inhalants are breathed in through any route other than inhalation.
03
the nose or the mouth in a variety of
ways, such us “sniffing,” “snorting,”
04
and inhaling from balloons filled
with nitrous oxide.
05 → Other methods of ingestion can
include “bagging,” which refers to
the sniffing or inhaling of fumes from
substances sprayed or deposited
inside a plastic or paper bag, and
“huffing,” which is done by inhaling
vapors from inhalant-soaked rags
stuffed in the mouth.
FOUR GENERAL CATEGORIES OF INHALANTS

01
Volatile
Aerosols Gases Nitrites
02 Solvents

04

05
Volatile • Are liquids that vaporize at room temperature. They are found in a
multitude of inexpensive, easily available products used for common
Solvent household and industrial purposes. These include paint thinners and
01
s removers, dry-cleaning fluids, degreasers, gasoline, glues, correction fluids,
02 and felt-tip markers.

03  Industrial or household products, including:

→ paint thinners or removers
04 → dry-cleaning fluids
→ gasoline
05 → lighter fluid
 Art or office supply solvents, including:
→ correction fluids
→ felt-tip marker fluid
→ electronic contact cleaners
→ glue
Aerosol • Are sprays that contain propellants and solvents. They include spray paints,
deodorant and hair sprays, vegetable oil sprays for cooking, and fabric
01 s protector sprays.

02

03  Household aerosol items, including:

→ spray paints
04 → hair or deodorant sprays
→ aerosol computer cleaning products
05 → vegetable oil sprays
• Include medical anesthetics as well as gases used in household or
Gases commercial products. Medical anesthetics include ether, chloroform,
01 halothane, and nitrous oxide (commonly called "laughing gas").

02

03  Found in household or commercial products, including:

→ butane lighters
04 → propane tanks
→ whipped cream aerosols or dispensers (whippets)
05  Used as anesthesia (to make patients lose sensation during
surgery/procedures), including:
→ ether
→ chloroform
→ nitrous oxide
• Often are considered a special class of inhalants. Unlike most other
inhalants, which act directly on the central nervous system (CNS), nitrites
Nitrites act primarily to dilate blood vessels and relax the muscles. While other
01
inhalants are used to alter mood, nitrites are used primarily as sexual
enhancers.
02

03  Often sold in small brown bottles labeled as:

→ Video head cleaner
04
→ Room odoriser
05 → Leather cleaner
→ Liquid aroma
Why do people sniff?

01 The reasons include:

02 • Boredom • Wanting to be part of a

• Feeling angry group
03 • Experimenting • Feel pressured by friends
• To have fun • Inhalants are cheap and
04 • To block out sadness, easy to get
pain or problems • Alcohol or other drugs
05 • Stop them feeling not available
hungry
Signs and Symptoms Of Inhalants Abuse And Addiction

01
Physical signs and symptoms of inhalant abuse
02 can include:

03 • Chemical odor on breath or clothing

• Paint or chemical stains on clothing or body
04 • Spots or sores around the mouth
• Red eyes, nystagmus, and double vision
05 • Stained fingernails
Signs and Symptoms Of Inhalants Abuse And Addiction

01
Behavioral signs and symptoms of inhalant
addiction:
02
• Dazed appearance
03 • Dizziness or unsteadiness of gait
04 • Slurred speech
• Difficulty concentrating
05 • Irritability
• Anxiety or sleep disturbance
How do inhalants affect the brain?

01 Most inhalants affect the central nervous

02
system and slow down brain activity. Short-
term effects are similar to alcohol and
03 include:
 Slurred or distorted speech
04
 Euphoria (feeling high)
05  Dizziness
 Inability to coordinate movements
What are the other health effects of inhalants?

Long-term effects of inhalant use may include:

01
 Liver and kidney damage
02
 Hearing loss
 Weight loss
03  Inattentiveness
04  Disorientation
 Lack of coordination
05  Depression and irritability
 Severe damage to the nervous system and other
organs.
Other effects of Inhalants

01 Sniffing solvents and inhalants has a depressant effect

on the brain. This means everything slows down. The brain,
02 the heart and the breathing all slow down. These effects
usually happen within 3-5 minutes.
Sniffing can change the way a person thinks, feels and
03
behaves. Some people feel light-headed and very relaxed,
like they are drunk. Some people feel happy or excited,
04
while others may feel angry, jumpy or quiet.
Sometimes people keep on sniffing so that they can
05 stay high longer but this can cause them to black-out or see
and hear things that are not really there.
