Biogas

What is biogas
• Biogas is a gaseous fuel mainly made of methane
• Cannot be stored as a liquid because it has a very high pressure
How is biogas made
• Made by anaerobic decay of waste material
• Made when microorganisms decay dead plant and animal material
anaerobically (without oxygen) – decay produces methane gas

• Made in a fermenter called digester or generator which is kept at a

CONSTANT temperature to keep microorganisms respiring
Generators
• All generators have:
Generators
Two types of generators:
- Batch generators
- Continuous generators
Batch Generators
• Manually loaded with waste and make biogas in small batches
• By products cleared away at the end of each session
Continuous Generators
• Waste continuously fed in and biogas produced at a steady rate
• For large scale biogas production
Friction
• If an object has no force propelling it, it will always slow down
because of friction
• Friction acts in opposite direction of movement
Drag
• Drag is resistance you get in a fluid (gas or liquid)
• For example – air resistance is a type of drag because it acts in gas –
car moving through air or falling object
Reducing drag
• Streamlining objects allows air to easily flow over objects so reduces
air resistance and drag
• Parachutes want maximum drag so they increase surface area
• As speed increases drag increases
