Aerated composting system
and humidity control.
INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM Leaf Litter
In the composting process the humidity has an important influence, if
there is too much humidity the compost does not allow the
microorganisms to do their work and reach the putrefaction phase; when Members:
there is no humidity the microorganisms cannot act in any way. The
temperature should reach up to 50-70ºC. You should notice that it is hot Sofia Lopez Sanchez
and you can even see that it gives off mist. Aeration is what brings oxygen Samantha Argaez Palacio
to the compost and also allows temperature control. Camila Jaramillo Mejia

OBJECTIVES
General:
• Design a modular composting system that optimizes aeration, moisture METHODOLOGICAL
and time factors by monitoring biological phases.
ROUTE
Specific:
• Establish design parameters by analyzing the biological phases of composting.
• Combine in a functional design system the subsystems in charge of optimizing the
composting process through the creation of a virtual model.
• Build a prototype according to the design parameters, estimating the quality deviation of
the system.
• Evaluate compost characteristics such as pH, aeration and moisture according to good
compost standards.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Compost is the organic matter composed of waste, used as the benefit of plants. Aeration
in composting is the supply of oxygen and the evacuation of CO2 with other gases
generated during the biodegradation of organic matter, humidity is the amount of water in
the composter with respect to the matter.

BACKGROUND
According to Equipos y Maquinaria Agropecuario (2020) the most extensive system for
composting with simplicity, low cost and good quality is specified in three designs: first is
the manual floor compost bin, second is the medium compost bin with manual labeling,
third is the industrial compost bin. The amount of organic matter depends on the size
and type of composter.
