Effect Of Solution

Viscosity On Mixing
Behavior

Chemical Reaction Engineering

What viscosity
means?

Jens Martensson
Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's
resistance to flow.

It describes the internal friction of a

moving fluid. A fluid with large viscosity
resists motion because its molecular
makeup gives it a lot of internal friction.

2
What is the effect of viscosity?
• A change of the fluid viscosity has
effects on the pressure

Jens Martensson
losses because a higher viscosity
leads to more friction on the walls of
the tank
• It also effect the mixing behavior.

3
Mixing

• Process of thoroughly combining different

materials to produce a homogenous

mixture.
• Mixing is a critical Process.
• Quality of the final product, attributes are
depends on the mixing performance

4
Objective of
Mixing
• To achieve a physical mixture.

Jens Martensson
• To bring a physical change.
• To achieve a dispersion.
• To promote a chemical reaction.

5
Mixing Time

• Mixing time is a key parameter used

for analyzing the performance and the

Jens Martensson
hydrodynamics of a stirred vessel. In
general terms, the mixing time is
defined as the time required for
achieving a certain degree of
homogeneity of tracer inserted in a
stirred vessel

6
Viscosity And Mixing Time

• Viscosity also strongly influences the process performance of

your industrial mixer. For example, if the viscosity of the

Jens Martensson
material you are mixing is higher than estimated, mixing time
can increase significantly.
• Viscosity has the effect of resisting fluid motion, so the motion
created by a mixer impeller in a viscous fluid may die out
before it moves the entire contents of the tank. With all non-
Newtonian fluids, the potential exists that a portion of a tank will
remain unmixed because of inadequate fluid motion.

7
How can viscosity affect the design
of a mixer?

Jens Martensson
• Viscosity plays a significant role in creating an optimal mixing
system. By switching up the agitator impeller design, size and
shape of the mixing vessel, and mixing speed, we can create
precise mixing solutions, no matter what kind of viscosities
are involved.

8
Experiment

• We conduct a experiment in which we note mixing time for ink to

dissolve in three different concentration solution

Jens Martensson
• And results shows that Mixing time increase with increase in viscosity
of solutions
