HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

OF SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY IN THE
PHIILIPPINES
Before the country earned independence from the
American colonies, science and technology had a
long history in the Philippines.
The earliest inhabitants of the archipelago had its
own culture and traditions prior to the arrival of
the Spanish invaders. They follow their own
beliefs and indigeneous wisdom, which keeps
them organized and support their way of life and
communities for a long time.

provide them foods.

 Sophisticated designs of gold and silver, jewelry,
ceramics, and metal tools proved that their
technological ideas helped in the development of
different tools.
 Trading with China, Indonesia, Japan, and other nearby
countries influenced their lives by providing different
opportunities for cultural and technological exchange.

considered now as indigeneous science or folk science

 Spanish brought with them their own
cultures and practice. They establish school
for boys and girls introduced the concept of
discipline.

technology in the country, known as school

SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD
 The Spanish colonial period introduced formal
education and founded scientific institutions. Parish
school was established where, religion, reading,
writing, arithmetic, and music were taught.
 Thespanish established colleges and universities in the
archipelago including the University of Santo Thomas.
 The study of medicine in the Philippines was given
priority in the Spanish era.
AMERICAN PERIOD AND POST
COMMONWEALTH ERA
They establish the public education system,
improved the engineering works and health
conditions of the people.
They establish and created more public
hospitals.
The mineral resources of the country werealso
explored and exploited.
MARCOS ERA

In1986 technology was recognized as a


top reason of economic development.
Marcos gave extra fund to support
project in applied science and science
education.

FIFTH REPUBLIC
During Corazon Aquino the National Science
and Technology was replaced by the
Department od Science and Technology or
DOST.

There are scholarships for students who are


interested in taking up courses related to
Science and Technology.
