PSYCHOLOGY & POSITIVE

JOURNALISM

International conference on an Indian issue

INTRODUCTION
 Journalism can never be silent: It should speak and speak
immediately. (Henry Grunwald)
 Journalism means gathering, processing and disseminating
information.
 Media can effectively set the public agenda by continuously
featuring a few issues in news coverage. (Chaple Hill)
 Positive journalism aims to give any story a positive spin in
order to give positive psychological impact on society.
 The Constitution of India dose not give absolute freedom to
press directly. It is given in article 19(1)(a) & restrictions is
given in article 19(2).
 Social media is approachable to almost all the people. It is
emerged as global conversation hub.
Why positive journalism?
Accuracy is most important aspect in journalism and for
this some basic principles must be followed.
 No deceptive handling of facts. Means to present the
fact as it is.
 Principle of independence. Journalism should not
represent any business group, individual &
organisation.
 Principle of humanity. Journalist should
be aware of consequences of what they are
publishing or broadcasting.
Examples showing lack of positive
journalism
 Indian media published headlines for ICMR deadline for COVID-19
vaccine release, but were not published headlines for IASc press release or
time taken at Oxford University for screening and selecting volunteers for
vaccine trial.
 Articles and blocks either in newspaper or on digital media are feeded with
unnecessary details which are not needed in a positive journalism.
 Due to lockdown, people are confined in their houses and they completely
depend over journalists for COVID-19 updates. But, Now-a-days,
conveying own idea through news channel is very much prevalent.
 Social media is one of the most psychologically impacting factor.
 In case of M.P. Lohia v. State of West Bengal, Hon”ble Supreme court
was of the view that the article appearing in media would interfere in the
functioning of judiciary.
Why positive journalism lacks?
 Supreme court ordered in good faith to follow only
official government data for COVID-19 developments.
But the administration misused it. F.I.R have been
launched against several reporters for open reporting on
corona.
 Some of them(media) are political oriented.

 Political pressure on news anchor: Sometime it is of

ruling party & some time it is of opposition parties.
 Unfiltered information, available on social media which
are being shared by users vigorously and carelessly.
 TRP competition among media.
Conclusion
 Journalists are only supposed to give their opinion.
 Positive journalism cover the aspects which has not been
covered in everyday news or broadcast. It may also
attract the interest of genuine readers, other than the
local readers.
 Journalism plays major role in reforming the society in a
better way. It is the most effective tool to bring positive
changes needed in the society.
