Formal Groups
• The Formal Groups are formed deliberately and consciously collectively
to direct the efforts of group members, especially the employees towards
the accomplishment of organizational objectives.
• The formal groups, mostly relate to the organizational missions and can
either be permanent or temporary. The permanent formal groups are in the
form of top management team such as the board of directors, management
committees, several departments within the organization etc. The
temporary formal groups are created to fulfill the specified set of
objectives.
The formal groups are formed to fulfill any of
the following purposes:
• To capitalize the expertise of each individual towards the accomplishment of complex
tasks.
• To make use of synergy, i.e. collective efforts of group members yields better results than
an individual working separately.
• To facilitate a proper decision-making, as with many people in a group the conflicting
ideas and thoughts arise that could be considered to formulate a better decision.
• To help others in the group to learn new skills and to know about the details of the
organizational environment.
• To satisfy the personal needs of social affiliations, i.e. need to get accepted by others.

Committees
• The Committees are a group of organizational members who gather to
examine, research, and talk about pressing issues before coming to a decision.
Typically, committees are established at various organizational levels.
• Members of the committee are only given the authority and power that the
appointer has granted them. Additionally, there is a cap on the number of
people who can serve on a committee because as the number grows,
communication tends to become more centralized and members are given less
time to express themselves.
Task Force
• The Task Force is a type of a group, formed temporary, in which people from different
disciplinary backgrounds come together to perform a specific task or mission. These are
different from the committees in the sense, these are temporary and has broader powers
of action and decision, greater responsibilities for investigation, analysis, planning and
research.
• The Task Force is temporary and disbands as soon as its original mission is completed.
It was established with the intention of utilizing the abilities, knowledge, and experience
of its members to address a unique organizational issue. The task force typically assumes
leadership when the organization is faced with a complex problem that is beyond the
reach of any one person or even the entire department to address.
Quality Circle
• The Quality Circle refers to the group of individuals who meet on a regular
basis to discuss the work-related problems. Generally, the quality circles are
small group gatherings, led by the supervisor or the manager who presents the
solutions to the management.
• The goal of establishing a quality circle is to encourage staff members to
discuss issues affecting their work area and contribute to raising overall
organization performance. The quality circles typically concentrate on topics
like occupational health and safety, enhancing the working environment,
improving the manufacturing processes, etc.
