RATIO AND PROPORTION

BUSINESS MATHEMATICS
QUARTER 1 MODULE 3
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the learner…

Identify the different kinds of proportions and write

examples of real – life situations for each.
ABM_BM11RP-If-3
Solve problems involving direct, inverse and partitive
proportion. ABM_BM11RP-If-4

MATH IS FUN!
Drill: BRING ME!
Activity: LET’S BE PAIR!
Types of Proportions:

Direct Proportion has two values that may
vary but the ratio between them remains the
same. In this proportion, an increase of one
variable will also increase the other variable,
and a decrease in one will also decease the
other.
Example:
The exchange rate of peso to
a dollar in 2022 is P45.00
to  $1. How much will you
get for $6.50?
Types of Proportions:

Inverse Proportion if an increase in quality
results to a decrease in another, then the two
quantities are in inverse proportion. This holds
true if a decrease in one quality results to a
increase in the other.
Example:
Three men can complete a
project in 3 weeks. How many
men will be needed if the
project is to be completed in a
week?
Types of Proportions:

Partitative Proportion if a given whole is to
be divided into several parts given a specified
ratio, partitative proportion is used.
Example:
Divide 100 in to parts 2:3: 5
Exercises:
a. Determine the ratio of the items presented in the problem.
1. There are 32 women and 12 men in the General Mathematics class.
What is the ration of women to all the students in the class?
2. A soccer team won 10 games and lost 5. What is the ratio of the wins
to the games played? Plant Inventory
Rose flower 12 Oak tree 6
Mahogany tree 8 Lilac flower 4
What is the ratio of the Oak trees to the  Mahogany tree?
What is the ratio of the trees to the total inventory?
Exercises:
b. Identify the kind of proportion shown.
1. Score to rating
2. Twenty men can paint a building in 15 days. How many days will it
take 30 men to paint the same building?
3. Number of kilos of rice to the amount that you will pay
4. Ruby, Rose, and Ann are business partners. They agreed to divide
their profits in the ration 1:2:3. How much should each receive if the
total profit is P6,000?
5. Your body size to the size of your uniform
6. Five pipes can fill a tank in 2 hours. In how many hours can 1 pipe fill
the same tank?
7. Number of kilometers you travelled to the number of your fare.
Problem Solving

1. Rose has a 240-page book to read. It has taken her 3 hours
to read 45 pages. How many hours will it take her to read
the entire book?
2. Ruby, rose, and Ann are business partners. They agreed to
divide their profits in the ratio 1:2:3, How much should each
receive if the total profit is P6,000?
3. Five pipes can fill a tank in 2 hours. In how many hours can
1 pipe fill the same tank?
GENERALIZATION:

Ratios and proportions are foundational to student understanding across
multiple topics in mathematics and science. In mathematics, they are
central to developing concepts and skills related to slope, constant rate of
change, and similar figures, which are all fundamental to algebraic
concepts and skills. Ratios and proportions are used in relationships
found in triangles, including trigonometric ones, such as sine, cosine, and
tangent, found in later algebraic instruction. In science, they are used
when quantities involve density, acceleration, and other comparable
derived measures. Even in real-life situations, ratios and proportions are
useful when determining amounts to be used in recipes or finding the
mileage per gallon of gas. In general, ratios and proportions describe
relationships between and among quantities. (According to the article:
Helping Students with Mathematics Difficulties Understand Ratios and
Proportions Barbara Dougherty, et. Al.)
